NEED ADVICE ON PICKUP CHOICE?

If you went for a Rebel Yell in the bridge, I would still be tempted to put a Crawler/Abraxas in the neck.  I think that would sit pretty well.  ('Course, I ain't heard many RY neck samples yet, but they would indeed have to be smokin' to overturn m love affair with the Crawler/Abraxas neck! :))

That's the combo I've got, or will have if I ever get round to installing them.  Hopefully this week!

Conventional wisdom is that uncovered humbuckers sound somewhat brighter than their covered counterparts, but my understanding is that BKP compensate for this when winding the pickups.

I think you should definitely go for covers - I have a Firebird Studio and it just wouldn't look right with uncovered pickups.

YEA I THINK COVERS DIFFENTLY MAKE THE LOOK OF THIS GUITAR, I THINK IT MIGHT LOOK KINDA COOL WITH THE LITTLE RAY GUNS ON THE COVERS IF I HAVE REBEL YELLS PUT IN.

If I recall correctly you can have the rayguns on whatever covers you like, not just the Rebels :P

bhodges5, what you want I believe is a Rebel Yell set.  I wouldn't personally change the neck pup too.  The neck pup in the RY set is wonderful.

I have a Rebel Yell set in my Les Paul, and it's absolutely great.   It fits your description (overwound PAF) and style of music perfectly.  Their clean tone is great and gained up they do great.  I've even got them to do thrash, although they are a tad too low output to get MY amp to the proper distortion level for most thrash without a boost, but I am sure with some higher gain amps (ENGL, Peavey, Mesa), they would work fine for that too.

The Crawler also comes to mind but I would heed BrianG's advice about it if you are not getting a maple top on this Les Paul - mahogany alone is the worst , IMO to find pickups for without sounding too bass heavy or muddy... plus the Rebel Yells seem like a better match... they are brighter and more mid heavy like one would expect from an "overwound PAF."  Search the Players forum for "Rebel Yell" and take a listen to all our clips... I did some but only two short ones are revelant IMO because I used a cabinet with some speakers I greatly dislike that wrecked the other clips.
