OK - Speech class - due Monday, possibly Friday...

We have to do a speech on a demonstration about anything we want - and I decided I'm going to go ahead and do something on guitar techniques like palm muting, vibrato, bends, hammer ons/pull-offs, and slides:twisted: . The thing is... we are required to keep it in a time limit of 4-6 minutes! How am I going to explain all this to newbies? Well, I put together a PowerPoint presentation quickly explaining TAB and using diamgrams to explain all the techniques listed above...I guess I just wanted some input on some passages I should use for each...

Bends = I was thinking the intro to Heartbreaker 8)
Slides = This lick I made up...open to suggestions though
Vibrato = ummm, the short Metallica passage in the middle of Fade to Black
Palm Mute = The blues shuffle, maybe the intro in Bring it on Home by Led Zep
Hammer ons/Pull-offs = I might use the intro in Fade to Black or Over the Hills and Far Away...I dunno yet

Then I'm thinking about ending it with just an improvisation using a pentatonic scale will all the techniques listed above....what do you all think? Any better ideas/suggestions? Just looking to make that damn A

play some fast palm muted thrash riffs, like Slayer and Metallica
and you could as a final to sum it all up by doing some legatos
Metal is forever, but I still got the blues for you

I wouldnt worry about the songs you choose all that much.

If youre giving a presentation then focus on structuring it clearly and explaining each thing concisely

Use an introduction to tell them what you're going to go through.

Say your piece

Go over it all again:

"Tell them what youre going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them".

I think 30 second intro, 4 minute body, 1 minute outro and 30 second summary piece of music sill be more than enough.

Be diciplined in what information you give out.

Keep your slides (the power point kind) clear and simple, and minimal in number. Dont try to add everything youre going to say to them: use bullet points and talk around them.

Oberve the time limit strictly.

Tell me if all this was totally redundant to you

Good input MDV. The only thing that was kinda redundant was "Tell them what youre going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them."    But I know what you mean; I just have to nail the information into their heads... I was probably going to play an intro without any technique then maybe go through each slide (each having it's own topic like bending, sliding, vibrato, etc) then play the same intro... I guess outro now...with the techniques implemented into it so they can get a feel of what playing WITH technique is like.

are you going to use fade to black to tell them how not to do vibrato?

"and here, if you'll notice, kirk sounds like he's having convulsions- you DON'T want to sound like this"

seriously, though, what mdv said is good. also remember- it's unlikely that to pass, you have to have all the guys who were listening know how to play guitar at the end... as long as it's clear and well structured, and in a sensible order, it should be grand.

and don't try to tell them too much- you only have a few minutes.

lol - That's a great idea!

But seriously, this is going to be my first time playing something in front a huge ass class on top of that, we are being taped ***BEING TAPED SUX***...I just hope I don't screw up and make myself into a jackass  :) . Even though that would be pretty funny...

^ yeah- to be honest, doing it about guitar might make it even more nerve-racking- as well as having to talk in front of loads of people, you're having to play good guitar as well!

If that's what you're most interested in, though, go for it!

Funny you should suggest that - my last technique im going to demonstrate is the infamous Van Halen tapping on eruption...just to make sure im doing it right:

e-----t12p--9p5----repeat repeat etc then
e-----t13p--9p5----repeat repeat?

Dunno if I explained it too well in TAB I'll post the clip as soon as I get up in the morning.
