Replacing Seymour Duncan Invader in Bridge - advice needed..
« on: March 30, 2007, 10:41:36 AM »
I am replacing my SD Invader pickup in the bridge position after hearing some VERY cool things about these pickups.

My current set up is Dean Phantom Noir XT Flying V into a DAM Meathead Deluxe (www.stompboxes.co.uk) into a splitter box, into a HH 100 watt bass head (with a Stagemaster 1 x 15 cab) and simultaneously into a 50 watt valve Selmer Treble n Bass (with a marshall 4 x 12  cab). I am lead guitarist and bass player all at once :o).

You can hear this setup and sound on our demo tracks on www.myspace.com/conandoomconan

The pickup I am using is a Seymour Duncan Invader in the bridge and while I like the sound, it just doesn’t sound quite how I want it. I have been searching for quite while to find a more rounded sound from the pickup and I keep finding myself lowering the tone pot to 2 / 3 and reducing treble / presence on my amps. This makes it sound ok but also takes some of the life from the guitar tone.

The sort of tone I am after is similar high output like the Invader but I was hoping for a more bass heavy (but tight sounding) sound that will also make the fuzz pedal ‘fuzzier’ without me having to cut all the tone using the pot if you catch me?

I am not really a gear expert but I just kind of want it to sound a bit ‘deeper’ and saturated if you see where I am coming from.

Important Question - if I want the distressed look in Black, am I able to ask for a custom engraving? I was kinda hoping they could do a CONAN logo on it.....?

What would you recommend?

Please advise.

Jon.

well i cant provide i huge insight into BK humbuckers as i dont know a great deal about them.

but if you want more saturation (essentially more gain/output...?), and more low end without sacrificing life of the sound...

i would say Warpig... listening to your clips its pretty damn heavy stuff.. so it covers that base, and its a pretty bass-heavy (not in a bad way), from what i have read and heard with a mates of mine...

also- with regards to custom engraving- yup you can get whatever you want (within in reason) done... i remember asking about that a while ago.

hope this is of some use!

cheers,

sam.

Yep, I reckon Warpig as well (it's the only Bare Knuckle I've actually used so far though). If you want more brutality then a ceramic one might be even better.

The Alnico one's got a fat low end and not exactly a shortage of power though.
Bare Knuckles owned: Mules, VHII, Rebel Yells, BKP-91, Strat 63 set, Riff Raffs.

Ok cool. So which one will saturate mor? I want a brutal tone but I want an 'organic' one too. The Ceramic Invader is HEAVY but sometimes it leaves me thinking it is a little harsh. I want heavy as hell but rounded and juicy too. Imagine Zoroaster but played by Ents.

How will the Warpig improve on the Invader?

I used to have the Invader  . I found it too muddy and open sounding, there was no tightness where the pickup was and aboslutely no highs so IMO it sucked for Leads but worked pretty well with Rhythm.
