OK so I tried a Duncan SH5 in my Carvin 7
« on: May 30, 2007, 07:29:10 PM »
and I'm still not getting what I want.
so now it's BK time.
My Carvin has an all mahogany body with a quilted maple top/maple fret board and SS frets.
the Duncan has much better note definition than the stock Carvin bridge pick up had but it's still way too bright and a little thinner sounding than I'de like.
So I've decided I will try a BK set.
So......... what is the thickest fattest sounding bridge pickup I could put in a 7 with the woods I described and still get that good sharp note definition?
also I need a neck pickuup, my favorite neck pickup is the Duncan 59 so what BK would be similar to that (except with more balls)
I run a 5150 combo into 2 4X12 cabs one loaded with greenbacks the other with V30's.
My Jackson soloist and my 2 GMW strats sound great thru this rig.
My Carvin should sound huge and thick and it doesn't.
Help me out guys, how can I fatten and darken this thing up?
can I be the devil on your shoulder?

I think it depends on what you like about the '59. Here's my list -

clarity and agressive bite - Riff Raff
huge, raw and wide open sound - VHII
balanced sound and organic vintage flavour - Mule or Crawler
smooth lead sound - Cold Sweat, maybe Abraxas

...IMO, of course.

Ok so I have an order in for a coldsweat for the nekc of this Carvin
and people over on the Sevenstring forum are telling me to have Tim use an Alnico Magnet instead fo a Ceramic to make it warmer, but doesn't that change the ...for lack of a better term "Personality" of the pickup?
I am going to be ordering a NailBomb for th bridge (Tims suggestion)
next month and I se that one has an Alnico magnet.
I emailed tim asking him about this but I haven't heard back yet.

can you guys give me some insight here?
thanks

AFAIK all BK neck humbuckers are Alnico. Painkiller neck might be ceramic but I'm not sure. Cold Sweat neck is Alnico V.

Afraid I can't help as far as the Cold Sweat goes, but yes, the Nailbomb bridge is an Alnico magnet. I had one in a Les Paul for about 18 months and I can't see any reason why it won't give you the kind of sound you're looking for. It has a fair amount of kick, but is nice and rounded. You'll get good definition from it too, and it'll also give a very good clean sound.
Warpigs.
