I've been thinking, since most preamps seem to be tailored towards mainly shred and metal... is there any really nice lower gain, bluesy preamps out there, with nice cleans?
I had a Mesa V-Twin, but it proved to be too muddy, and slightly scooped sounding on all channels. Other than that it was quite nice however; with a nice gain structure. just poor e.q.
I guess there's plenty of valve based pedals, but I'm thinking more rackmount atm.

The MTS preamp by Randall looks interesting, there are plenty of clean/low-gain modules to choose from.

The Plexi module is great, other than that I was not impressed. However, the luxury version of the Randall system, the original from Egnater, is pretty awesome. It has fantastic modules for Twin, Deluxe, Vox, Plexi, etc. sounds that are hard to top.

To be honest, not a preamp as such, but the Tonelab SE is great for blues or rock sounds.

The clean channel on the ADA MP1 will do the trick nicely, or even a low gain setting on the Distortion channel

And if you want less gain take an ADA MP1 and change the valves to lower output ones like a 12AU7 and that will work a treat

Because the very nature of getting a good blues tone comes from the direct connection of the player and a combo amplifier, with the absolute minimum amount of 'stuff' between the player and the audience.

Instead of being an arse and telling you you're wrong I`ll give you an option I think would work. Try a Marshall JMP-1, used you can pick one up for £150 and the Plexi setting is really nice. It might not sound like a Plexi but it sounds sweet when it's set to just break up.

I don't want really this preamp at all guys - don't need it. I was just wandering if one exists, because it just seemed to be a massive gap in the market to me. You guys seem to reckon that nobody would want anything like it though...
I always just figured that having a rack of gear would be a great tool for versatility if you had a few differently voiced preamps and a nice poweramp. Especially in a studio setting...

True.

But a lot of studios use POD's and studio magic these days. In fact, I reckon most records out there use POD's for some part of the recording, especially metal records.
