Jackson RX10D + BKPS?
« on: October 27, 2007, 09:11:59 AM »
Hey guys, sorry to have another ''what should i get'' kind of post, but im a bit new to BKP's, love the tone and wouldnt mind a reccomendation. I use a Jackson RX10D at the moment, through a Marshall AVT150 and typically something like a Line 6 Uber Metal pedal. I'm looking to replace the stock Seymour Duncan's, as they are just too muddy and don't give me enough harmonics.

Basically, I know I'm going to sound a bit all over the place here, but I'm looking for a high gain pickup which I can get killer harmonics on. Sort of Judas Priest's Painkiller/Zakk Wylde/Dime. I know its a bit of a range, and hell ontop of all that I'm a complete Maiden freak :P but they're my sort of tonal wants. Any thoughts? I was thinking a calibrated pair of MM's, but not really 100% sure, and being a poor student I can't afford to make a mistake :D

thanks guys

Why not go for a set of Painkillers then?! haha, that sounds right up your alley, loads of mids for Maiden and Priest but also killer high gain harmonics for Zakk and Dime.

thanks for the advice, PK's huh?...i'd thought about them, i think its a toss up between the PK's, MM's or NB's. How does the PK compare to those 2 for output?

Painkiller has the most output apparently though i have had all 3 in the same guitar, here's what i thought:

Miracle Man - Has the most output and is the least versatile out of the lot, seems like a great all out metal and harmonics flying everywhere pickup.
Nailbomb - The most versatile out of the 3, great rolled back cleans and stuff , the most articulate too, you can hear every note.
Painkiller - I finally settled on a set of these and i still have them, loads of mids for that grinding Priest and Maiden thing, found it more versatile and articulate than the Miracle Man though apparently it has more output!

Painkiller certainly sounds like where i should be headed tone wise, im just a bit worried about loss of harmonics between that and the mm

Oh and if you're not happy with your choice Tim will exchange your pickups as long as they are in 100% good condition. Usually between 14 days from purchase, but he traded my Piledriver set easily enough a month later.

There is no loss of harmonics, infact i remember tim saying the Painkiller has more harmonics than the MM because it is tighter.

thing is though, is the painkiller faster than a laser bullet and louder than an atom bomb :P

i'll have to check with tim i guess, but painkiller certainly seems like the route i should go for

heres a controversial opinon:

why not sell the AVT and put the pickup money with the amp sale money towards some kind of tube amp. for example: laney gh50l are really cheap on ebay. that will benefit all your guitars, now and in the future.

but regarding pickups - definately painkiller :)

well, i would sell the avt, which does partially use tubes btw, however being a poor student whos only just got  a job, for now the avt is most convienient, mostly because i can get reasonable tone at low volumes and the line out can go straight to my pc for recording. though i do want a new amp - i was considering saving up for a krankenstein but im not really that sure. i really need to do more research - i was considering also either a jm800 or a D/TSL by marshall.

if you're patient and save money for some months, buy a framus dragon or cobra  :D

mine arrived today and it's the best thing i've played
it roars!
smokes my bandmate's mesa stiletto, my ex-rectifier, my other rig (peavey rockmaster preamp + tubeamps gemini power amp with 2x6550 and a leadvox leadmaster SLO/5150 preamp) and the other top amps i've tried (mesa triaxis, lifesound jcm800 2204, lifesound slo100, mesa dual rectifier, randall titan, laney vh100r)

i know it's damn expensive
i had to import my half stack from united states (used, of course) and waited 4 months for it

it sounds a bit fizzy in low bedroom volume, but on band volume it's the best thing i've heard
A LOT better than all clips i've downloaded on internet and youtube cr@ppy videos

i wasn't expecting to like it better than my peavey rockmaster (the grandpa of triple xxx/jsx), cause it was my favorite metal distortion and it's "plug & play" without any tweaking, dense, punchy, clear and tight, etc.... but the framus is better and even heavier!
what a great suprise... before receiving the amp i was already thinking of selling it!

ps: DON'T BUY A KRANK
the guy that sold me the framus bought a krank and now he regrets a lot
there's a huge fizzy and fuzzy sound that is impossible to turn off (maybe with some gain stages mods to low down the preamp gain)

one of my bands usually rehearses with AVT heads
actually it doesn't have any tube drive
the tube is used for a cathode follower (buffer stage), that makes the transistor distortion sound a bit more smooth, with a little tube feel

well yeah, that was what i meant about the tube part. yeah definately expensive, and i'd go for it but the issue is it has to sound ok at bedroom volumes unfortunately for the moment, and as you know, tubes dont really do bedroom volume. someone please prove me wrong, i beg you :(
