Author Topic: Getting my Mule neck rewound to a Crawler neck.... (Read 5345 times)

I should have thought of it earlier... but better now than never! I just realised that I need more output on my Mule neck, to achive the sound I would like better!

I mean, I really like The Mule, but I only wish it had more output. So, by giving it more "DC", my Mule neck is about to reincarnate into The Crawler neck :D

Maybe I should have gone for Cold sweat neck when Tim suggested... But I wanted something warmer, with more mids. Cold sweat just scared the hell out of me when I got that Broderick solo sample he sent me, lol. It just sounded too.. hm... too brutal for my taste :D and like I said, I wanted something softer and warmer, with more mids. Maybe I was wrong?

I just hope that Crawler will work for me... Come on guys, cheer me up!

If you only knew howmuch stuff i bought just to find out it wasnt for me you would really feel better about this LOL.

It just comes with the struggle to find your own sound and style. I am also struggling to come up with some reference material so i can judge pickup characteristics better from the clips here, knowing i probably have to just try something and be happy or get something else.

Instead of rewinding your mule it could be an option to put it in another guitar and just order a crawler. The mule sounds damn good in my ears.

So what do you guys think? I would still consider getting the Cold Sweat neck, if it would give me the tone I want... So please check that clip, and give me some advice, please.

Have you talked to Tim about this? - are you aware that the Crawler neck pickup is just a Mule wound a tiny bit hotter? (only 400ohms Tim told me). That's what I got as a wanted a slightly hotter than stock Mule for the neck.

All this talk of Cold Sweat neck pickups has me wanting one for my Explorer - should match up nicely with the bridge Nailbomb.

Did you have and alnico IV or V mule? Isnt the crawler neck the same as the Abraxas neck? At least i have read that somewhere.

I guess if tim suggests something i would give it serious consideration since he knows his pickups best, i find it hard to gather information from clips especially since they are mostly with alot of drive and so on.

It's alnico IV mule... And I still have it! I'll send it as soon as I get a final reply from Tim.

Yeah, its hard to figure out the right tone from the clips... It's a great thing we are able to communicate with the maker himself, and from my experience I can say he's really doing his best to help out.

As for the Abraxas neck, I'm not sure. Doesn't sound logical to me. Why would there be two identical pickups with just a different name?

I have checked the website and it says the crawlers are alnico V, so if you would rewind your alnico IV Mule you wont get a crawler neck pickup.

When you 'hotwind' the Mule IV youll get an abraxas as far as i know. I also gathered from listening to samples that the abraxas neck sounds alot less clear and versatile when compared to the Mule IMHO. In any case its a totally different pickup then the nailbomb IMHO. If you want matching cleans from your neck, im sceptic about getting it from such a pickup and would rather look into a cold sweat. Rewinding doesnt seem an option, at least to me it doesnt.

Let me clearly state that i dont have these pickups, so im just using my best judgement.

Well, heres what The Man told me :)

"the Crawler neck takes the neck Mule tone to a much hotter level-DC7.6K Alnico IV."

And btw, don't get confused by what you see on the website... Alnico V is for the bridge version. I also got confused that way when I thought that Cold Sweat neck is actually ceramic. Cold sweat bridge is ceramic, while the neck version is Alnico V.

The homepage really needs descriptions of the neck models.

It's funny though, I always thought the Crawler/Abraxas neck sounded completely different from the Mule neck. The mule has a more bassy "ooh" to it, and the Crawler has that singing "French u" (or German ü) vocal tone.

Just to confirm, the Crawler and Abraxas neck models are the same pickup, unless Tim has changed the specs.

Good choice! Can't comment on how it compares with the CS neck though.

Just got a reply from Tim... you wouldn't believe it! According to the clip above, the COLD SWEAT would work best for me, however, rewind is not an option I think....

So... Anybody wanna buy a sevenstring Mule neck? :D
