gibson xr-1, whats it worth?
« on: November 01, 2007, 03:38:49 PM »
well, i really don't play this guitar all that much, i don't quite like the feel of it. Anyway, for fun i listed it on craigslist with a selling price of $1000. after one day i got 2 responses. Now, i bought this guitar for $750 off of craigslist. Is this guitar more valuable than i thought? or should i hurry up and sell this bitch?

You don't really like it & have the opportunity to make a small profit on it.  Do you even need to ask? ;)

Check the ebay completed listings too, usually pretty good indicator of how much things are worth.

Dude, that does sound a bit fishy ... somewhat too-good-to-be-true whilst also being over complicated.

A quick google on the most suspicious phrase "i will be paying through a certified cashier check and i will be responsible for the shippment" turfed up this (top match):

http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html

I'd be very wary of that request, and TBH if I were you I would ignore it.

yep, its a scam:

from criagslist about scams:

# you receive an email (examples below) offering to buy your item, or rent your apartment, sight unseen.
# cashier's check is offered for your sale item, as a deposit for an apartment, or for just about anything else of value.
# value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item - scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service

That's a typical Nigerian Scam.........

They try doing it to me at any time I've tried selling one of my guitars via on-line sales websites.  For every properly interested buyer I get about 20+ e-mails from Nigerian scamsters.

The trick is that they pay you via an EXCEEDINGLY good forged cheque, and you then cash that cheque into your account.  The cheque is a very good forgery so it'll clear into your account.  They then say that they will handle the shippment (Why?  FedEx, UPS, DHL etc etc are exceedingly good at delivering things worldwide) and the cheque they've sent you is always for more than you wanted for the item.  This difference is to be paid via cheque to the person who comes to collect the item from you.

What then happens is that the person who's bank account has been debited with the forged cheque complains to their bank that they never signed the cheque.  The bank then refunds their cash and goes looking for where the money got to, and therefore takes the money back from your account.  You've actually signed the cheque you gave to the scam artists, and as this whole process with the bank reclaiming the money takes so long your cheque will have been cashed, and the money taken out of whatever account it was paid into.

You've then lost your guitar, your cheque for the item, and you have no record of where anything went because you didn't ship the item yourself to a recognised address.  All you have is an e-mail address which will always be a webmail address, and will always die straight after they get your guitar.

They're scum and they've taken a lot of money from a lot of people, and I only avoided a similar scam on a racing bike I tried to sell via the sales part of the British Cycling Federations webpages because of one of my firends who works for the local plod.  He tipped me off, and we tried to keep the scammer on the end of the hook by pretending to go along with him, only to find nothing to get them on in the end.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot!

damn, it appears both replies were scams. The second inquiry was sent at the exact same time as the first, so i'm assuming they're both scams. It sure would've been nice to have that money...

You had a lucky escape there, I have just seen this thread and as I was reading it I was saying nooooooooooo. As Jonesy says, a lot of these originate in Nigeria. Google scambait  and you will find a great website all about scammers.

It's always a double whammy
You end up not getting paid for the item AND you end up paying the carriage too- with no way of tracing it!

If it sounds too good to be true - guess what?

It probably is!!

yeah i thought it sounded too good to be true, but when you think of that, you usually think of scams when you're buying stuff, not selling it.

well if anyone wants this guitar, let me know!
