Poweramp and preamp.....
« on: November 04, 2007, 06:24:54 PM »
So, if you were going to get a poweramp and pre amp instead of just a head, for something quite heavy, what would you get?

Also, how do the stereo inputs on your cab work with them? i heard you can split the highs and lows?

Any help would be great, thanks

Mesa 20/20 or 50/50 power amp and maybe a Tech 21 PSA-1 or ADA MP-1.

+1
Or try the ENGL preamps or the Mesa ones, or Soldano etc

Peavey Rockmaster is a good cheap option too

Stereo power amps usually get used to allow separate left and right channels
Not that many players bi-amp for guitar unless using a powered sub like an ISP one

Probably a Mesa 50/50 with either a ENGL Preamp, Digitech 2101, Digitech GSP1101, Soldano SP-77 or Mesa Studio or Quad Preamp.

It's a good question about what gear will best suit but raises a few questions :

1) is it for playing at home or in a small studio setup?
If so then many bigger power amps have just too much power/volume available and you can rarely get them above 2-3 on the volume

2) Are you playing with a band or hope to join a band with your rig
Then you will need 50-100 watts per side
Also if you are wanting the same sound as big amps like Marshall, Mesa, Engl etc then you would be best to get a power amp that uses the same style of valves like EL34 or 6L6.
The power amps with the smaller EL84 valves sound really nice but the sound is sweeter and more compressed in my opinion and not sonically the same as  if it ran on EL34s, 6L6(or 5881s), 6550s etc

It's to replace my 5150 II

I'm looking to get an Egnater Mod 50, but just can't get in touch with them after sooooo many attempts, still my number one option though

But, the mesa 2:90 seems good for me as a poweramp, it's just the pre amp that i'm wondering about?!

Maybe a dual rectifier preamp? If i don't like it i can just replace one half instead of the whole thing

thats still a shedload of gain on a 5150! and who said you had to scoop the mids out for metal? Kerry king would floor ya.
As far as rack equipment goes; for anything from light rock to heavy metal i think ENGL will cope better than anything else, especially if you like your mids! which will be far better than a recto's mids (or lack of them)

Fair enough.

Any ENGL preamps you can recommend?

Is there a better power amp than a Mesa 2:90?

Will it sound better than my 5150 II?
