Which BKP can do this?
« on: November 10, 2007, 11:07:22 AM »
Now here's something you all know I like very much :) yes yes, this clip is from Wintersun themselves!

I'm really curious which BKP could do this tone. I love it cos his palm muting sounds very punchy and percussive.  Yes, I know he is scooping his mids, lol. And yes, I know he uses a Tokai telecaster and Mesa boogie.

But still, I'm really into getting a new guitar soon, and I sure don't intend to buy a telecaster. So I'm asking you, which BKP humbucker would help me achieve such a monstrous palm mutes??

I also haven't decided which guitar will it be, so you can also recomend me a guitar wood if necessary.

So here's the link to a simple clip from Wintersun song "Starchild". Thank you all :)

I wish women were like pickups - if they lack output, you sell them... or ask Tim to rewind them :D

Yes. And its a bit of a process of elimiation.

The tone is dark and thick, with tight punchy bass. I'd tend toward an A5 magnet for those highs, but you'd need the tightest of playing to get A5 to sound that tight. So it goes like this:

Miracle man: tight enough, but the resonant peaks too high, and it has too much treble.

PK: Too middy by far.

Warpig: would tdo the high end og that perfectly, but that doesnt seem to be what youre interested in.

Ceramic pig: works. Sharper sound than that, but overall the best fit.

Heavy PMing would allow the A5 pig to dot the job the best, but I'm assuming a more standard issue technique on your part, rightly or wrongly. Dont be offended! I dont know how you play, I just know how the pickups sound.

Trust me, my PMing is quite good :D I can pick VERY fast (18.1 notes per sec on a single note, my personal record :P) and quite tight, so I doubt this is the issue :D

Isn't ceramic Warpig a bit too brutal for this?

Well, I'll take you at your own measure

You can turn the gain down, y'know  In terms of general tonal characteristics, the pigs will get you closest. If you have the faith in your ability to shape the tightness with your technique, go with the A5.

How about A8? It is something between alnico and ceramic...

That really punchy palm muting comes also from multi-tracking those bits during recording, and being incredibly precise; i wouldn't be surprised if there were upwards of 4 tracks for the mutes. I think Jari also used a Jackson too for the rhythm bits :)

Warpig of some descript for that tone though :)

Not a bad shout. Ask Tim, though. I have no idea how A8 performs with a pig wind.

Philly: You set a click at X BPM (in this case about 270) and play your choice of pattern of notes (I assumed double time 16ths for the 270 just then, so you have 4 notes per beat, see next bracket) and then work out how many nps you get with that grouping and timing (4 notes per beat, 270 beats per minute, (4x270)/60 = 18 notes per second).

maths.

He plays a set subdivision of a beat at a measured BPM (using a metronome)
divides his BPM by 60 and then multiplies by the number of subdivisions he plays.

For example a hemi-semi-quaver (32nd note) at 208BPM is around my limit.

208/60 = 3.466666667 (calculator - YAY)

x8 = 27.73333333

Probably superfluous I expect as your question was probably rhetorical but I felt like showing off :D .

edit: but MDV has beat me :(
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Not rhetorical at all, I was genuinely baffled by how you'd measure it.  Cheers guys, great explanations - but my brain just can't compute that kind of speed!

I won't be giving it a try.  I'm more from the Leslie West school - 2 or 3 notes per second is hella fast for me.

Not in speed, though!

I can play faster, but the fastest I've actually clocked myself is 23nps. Fastest I've recorded anything with multi-tracking (with my obsessive attentiveness to presicion) is 270bpm, so the same as wintersun.

Edit: quite welcome, Phil.

And the right notes >>>>> the most notes, every time. Even a metal freak like me knows this!
