if you can play the guitar first, and it seems okay, i'd say go for it! you'll get it for less than a non damaged one, and it is likely to be just as good. the seller is being completely honest, which is a good sign. i once tried out a Les Paul in a shop, which had very obviously been broken off at the headstock, and the guys in the shop insisted it had never been damaged. i'll never so much as buy strings off them now!
but if they'd been honest things could've been so different!! anyway, if the guitar seems fine, then it's likely to be just that. i ramble. sorry!
