This is one of my favourite solos and getting a set of Apaches is a perfect excuse to try recording it. It's from Gold by Ryan Adams, I don't know who the guitarist was because I've managed to lose the sleeve notes.

Guitar is a US Strat, Apache neck and middle pickups.

Amp is a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe on clean channel - volume on 9 with the guitar volume rolled back to 6 - 7 (thanks to the hot plate)

There's a touch of compression on the solo (let me know if I've over done it).

I have to confess that the guitar on the backing isn't fitted with BKPs.

Gorgeous tone! That hotplate really makes that amp sound alive. I'll get me one as soon as have some money to spend.

Those pickups, that amp and the hotplate: That's how a classic Strat is supposed to sound like.

You're absolutely right about the hot plate. Before I got it I couldn't turn the amp up past about 3 - 4, even at gigs (about 1/2 at home). The only way I can describe it is the amp seems to come to life and 'breath' a little when you turn it up.

Wow! What a sound! That's such a sweet tone. Great clip, it's like CD quality! How did you record it? :D

Thanks, Jonny - I took note of some of the guys on the forum saying clips would sound better with a full band.

Software is Mixcraft.

Drums are courtesy of Beatcraft (came as a deal with Mixcraft - about £50 for both),

Acoustic guitar is a Simon and Patrick cedar top through an SM58 into an ancient Fostex 4 track (I think that's where all the hiss is coming from) into the line in of my PC - I used a trick I picked up from one of the other forums of double tracking it and panning to 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock,

Bass and piano are me playing live on an old Korg M1, direct into the Fostex,

The lead guitar is close miked with the SM58.

The rest is tweaking, tweaking, tweaking . . . . .

sounds great! I gotta get me a Hotplate for my HRDx aswell, even at like 0.5 it sounds too loud, I piss the whole family off!

I disagree - those pickups, those amp settings and no hotplate are what a strat should sound like :drink:

Thanks for that Gary! It really sounds nice, I listened to it a few times before I went out earlier, great stuff! Those clean sounds your getting are superb! Well the tweaking is paying off mate, it sounds brilliant. Does George Martin pop by your house much? :lol:

Question :!: Do you know anything about Cubase 5.1 vst :?: It's software for everything in pc or mac recording. The thing is I keep getting this echo which repeats the repeat if you know what i mean! There's so much noise after about 20 seconds i have to shut it down.

So I can't record any multitrack stuff or even add drums. All I'm doing is recording with a .wav file and converting to mp3.

Those attenuators are great. I've got one on my Koch and it makes it really big :lol:

I used to use Cubase a lot in the 80's. Back in those days it only did sequencing and an Atari with half a megabyte of RAM was the height of sophistication. I've had no experience of it as a digital recorder so I'm afraid I can't help. If you have a registered version you could try customer support.

I remember a mate of mine about 12 years ago had a set up like that, with this expensive Akai sampler. Thanks anyway Gary. It makes me want to get a analogue multi-track tape recorder this cu-base. I've never come across software so overly complicated. You need a glossary of terms the size of the yellow pages just to be able to understand the help files. I'm sure it's great once things start to make sence, but cos of this poxy glitch i'm still no further up the learning curve than i was when i bought it 6 weeks ago! :lol:

I checked my sleeve notes and the lead player on that track was Ethan Johns.
