What Amp to Buy?
« on: November 23, 2007, 07:16:35 AM »
Hey all, ive been really enjoying my miracle man through my 75watt g2 randall rg combo. Hoever it was recently stolen (and out of our college chapel of all places). So now im looking at some stack, im tossing up between a

Randall RH-300 G3 300w Guitar Amp Head
and a Hughes & Kettner Matrix 100 Head

both at the same awosme price!

Im not sure of the tonal characteristics of the hughes and i know randall basically has one of the best extreme metal tones. However im wondering if the Hughes has good distortion as well as cleans, like soem reviews are saying.

Any thoughts on the two would be greatly appreciated.

I had a Randall RG200G3 a while back.  I really liked the amp, but the distortion was a *little* lacking for me (:D). Anyway, I wouldn't have got rid of it, but for a couple of reliability issues, so I got a used Peavey 5150-II with a 5150 cab.

I can THOROUGHLY recommend the 5150-II (or 5150 if cleans/separate EQ aren't as important to you!).

The new version of the 5150 is the 6505. They are identical.
The new version of the 5150-II is the 6505+, these are also identical.

Very, very, very good amp :)

i've played a matrix and they are awesome. nice cleans and a mean distortion (warp channel  ) then theres the dfx which program to each of the four channels. really versatile i'd say :)

H&K over Randall any day of the week! Although I'd sooner go for a Trilogy than a Switchblade... I wish someone would give me a grand to buy one?

*waits for karma to reward me with the afore-mentioned £1,000 for being so damn good this week*

yeah theres something about switchblade that just doesn't seem quite right. even though i know the tube sound is completely independent from the digital effects and all, i still would stand in front of it and feel like i wasn't in front of fully tube beast.
