Got my new pickupss.
« on: November 24, 2007, 08:31:02 PM »
Okay, so i got my new p/u's on thursday. Have to say i was very impressed with the packaging and the strings etc etc. Did the electronics today, wasn't that simple because of the new "superswitch" i wanted in. Basically, its an HH guitar and i wanted coil splits but i don't like all that push pull switching so i got a five way switch. Bugger to solder especially as the guitar is so thin (its an S-series ibanez.)

Yeah so anyway, i've got a nailbomb in the bridge and a cold sweat in the neck and they are AMAZING. I've been playing mostly clean since my amp ( h&k warp x ) says no to producing mean distortion below 1 on the master volume and i can only have it at 1/2 in my room. However, i'm blown away by the transformation in tone and clarity and just everything. I wasn't really expecting the best clean tone from a full on nailbomb but its nicee. What is even nicer though is the split NB sound. It's just lush. I've never had that before. I got a tasty progression going and got my DD-20 to loop it and i lost an hour and a half just playing around over the top and fiddling with all these new sounds. I can't begin to say how happy i am with them and i fail to see how i ever survived before. Thanks BKP  :D

ooo i nearly forgot how sexy they look:

just an update:

everyone went out so i had a chance to crank this up. i say crank it up, it was at 1 which is about how loud i can take it in my smallish room. but believe me, its such a difference in tone from bedroom-sister-in-the-next-room levels.

anyway, stuck it on the warp channel 8) and it just blew me away.

the cold sweat neck is sooo smooth. exactly what i wanted + more. with a bit of delay it's just ahhh i can't describe it. put it this way, i'm 17 and i've never EVER gurned, but i found myself needing to. strange, eh?

nailbomb in bridge is so mean aswell. so focused and tight. used to get feedback between palm mutes, and theres none of that anymore. pinched harmonics squeal like a poorly played violin. and higher up the neck, if i dig in, the tone bites.

needless to say i'm f-ing thrilled with these pickups. its just such a pleasure to play now.  :D

Cool that you're happy ... but I should point out that once you start gurning, that's it - there's no going back

Why did you choose CS in the neck insteas of a calibrated Nailbomb-set?

A lot of people are talking about Nailbomb+CS but the Nailbomb is Alnico V and the CS is ceramic right? in theory that is a little bit strange?

Sounds to me that with a ceramic neck-mic you´ll lose some warm feeling in the neck and not so versatile? Am I wrong?

yeah. bkp don't make ceramic neck pickups (except for a few exceptions - Painkillers i believe.)

edit: i chose it over the calibrated set, because of what i'd read and also because tim said so. i thought i wanted a miracle man but he turned me onto a nailbomb  :)  and im happy i followed what he said. its perfect for me.

Aha. so the neck version of CS is alnico? the productinfo says it is ceramic, but nothing about the neckversion?

Can you describe the differences between nailbomb neck and CS neck (why Tim told you to choose CS)?

yeah i think all the product infos magnets (& and resistance) refer to the bridge version of the pickup.

to be honest, the nailbomb calibrated set was not mentioned in my phone call. i called up and said: "right, i'd like some pickups, i want a metal bridge but that is also versatile and a neck that has nice cleans but soaring, petrucci-esque leads. i think i want the miracle man in the bridge and a cold sweat in the neck." and he said that a nailbomb would be better suited to what i described. then we talked about switching etc. i was in a school break at the time so it was a pretty short call.

i'm sure someone here has experience of both neck pickups and would be able to tell you the difference between them.
