Cables....

So, i've used planet waves cable for as long as i can remember, simply because, i get them for free, they're pretty high quality and never let me down (only had 2 in about 4 years, i lost one)

But i see alot of people on here bitching about them...

So, what's better?

New guitar, new pickup, soon to be new amp, why not new lead!?

In my experience with Planet Waves cables (3), i've noticed that the cables seem to perish and deteriorate just after the molded strain-relief. I can't see myself purchasing them again due to the cost:life ratio, so i'd rather buy a Van Damme cable that has superior connectors that i can salvage and re-use when the cable does fail eventually. I've also found that because the PW cables tend to succumb to noise and interference (both radio and mechanical) earlier than other cables, but that's due to the cable being thicker and therefore not being able to be bend so sharply.

That said, if you're getting them for free, then i don't see really why you should change.

I've used Proel die hard cables for the past 12 months because they have good quality contacts so the sound transmission is excellent, plus they're not too expensive ...... might be worth a look. Probably too early to comment but they seem very reliable. I have a piranha cable as well which I used to use from time to time, but I don't honestly think there's a vast amount of difference between most brands so just like strings, find a brand that suits your needs and you're happy with and stick with it, and there's probably no need to spend a huge amount of money on them either. I just prefer my cables to other similar ones because of the high quality contacts plus I think they have a very slightly thicker tone than the piranha, which is just my perference.

Hope this is useful

I don't mind paying for something else though.

It's not that much money if it's going to last me

I use the Planet Waves cicuit breaker cables, and they are spot on. Been using same ones for about a year, no wear, no sound interferance, no breaking, nothing.

Although I hear good things about Goerge L's...

I had one of those (circuit breaker). It was awesome and i found the mute terribly useful and i could also do some tom morello stuff with it. It broke though and then i picked up some control ones cheap from a guitar show. But they seem to be failing now aswell, so i'm looking towards George L's. Can anyone recommend them?

I've gone through several cables in the past year or two. Started with an old Proel cable then changed to Planet Waves. It was like pulling a wet blanket off my sound. Then I started to use TAD, I can't remember any significant difference between the two brands, though. Finally, I bought a Zaolla Silverline cable and was blown away. The TAD cables were very nice so I didn't know what to expect but wow! my sound became much clearer, especially the low-end. It's not brighter but more defined, much like your first BKP's vs. stock pickups so it's difficult to explain. It's one of the most expensive cables but the improvement is definitely audible.

If I were to go into using cables lots, I would probably go for:

Seems alright.
Twinfan had a thread about a wireless thing, and I got annoyed at cables breaking, so I play guitar while walkies around the house now :D

Will get some patch cables from that place soon, and a few spare for the sake of it

that zaolla cable is mighty expensive. £50 for 3m. Looks pretty damn good though.

I use some that I got from an ebay seller called rapid-cables or something like that. Neutrik jacks with unbranded cable, they work great. Only cost about £6-7 each as well.

:) Took it with my sisters expensive camera, will be using the full size one as a part of one of my projects for uni, using photoshop to make a montage so I'll be doing a guitar magazine cover with that as the main image.
