Woohoo - going into the studio tonight :0)
« on: November 27, 2007, 10:18:24 AM »
Yep, I'm heading into the studio tonight and tomorrow night with Doublecut to record the remaining 8 tracks of our 12 track album demo.  All the tracks are blues/rock originals written by our singer and my fellow axeman.  He's a Texas Special fanatic so no BKPs for him.  Philistine

Mind you, I'm taking three guitars today but none of them are BKP equipped.  Sorry Tim and the boys    I've got fresh strings and setups on a couple of my non-BKP guitars so I'm taking them instead.  I can't take my Riff Raff'd SG as I end up playing Angus licks all the time!  I'm sure that guitar has telepathic powers - I can't play anyhting other than 'DC on it

There is some hope though, my aged AIV Stormy Monday is heading my way today and should arrive tomorrow  :D  It's for my Tokai Love Rock Relic to pair with the zebra Mule that's already in the bridge.  With any luck it'll arrive early in the day and I'll get chance to wire it in by mid afternoon.  If that's the case I'll take that set of BKPs in tomorrow night.

Rather than the JTM45 I'll be recording with my Tiny Terror/G12H & V30 2x12 and a few booster pedals, plus a Blackstar HT Dual.  I'm the "heavy Gibson tone" to the singer's "Strat man sound" so I should be able to get a nice dirty Gary Moore/Slash/John Sykes vibe with a Les Paul and the TT.

I'm cacking it big time about the solo breaks I've got though...........

Nice one! I've only been in the studio properly once, (so far!) but it was SO much fun to do, I just want to get back in there and finish off the rest of our tracks!

I hope it goes well, I'm sure it will!

ditto on the above! Irish tours would soooo convert him. maybe the band could, er, band together and buy him a set for his birthday or christmas or something maybe? Then he'd HAVE to give em a go.

Have loads of fun in the studio. I've never done it myself, but i imagine it'll be awesome!
LOVING the Mules!

Cheers guys.  I've never been in the studio before so I'm hoping it'll be a great experience.  Of the 8 tracks I think I'll be playing lead on half of them.  For the others, the singer has defined leads he'd like so he's playing them.

For future tracks, and live, it'll be much more of a collaboration between us.  The joys of being the newbie in the band eh  ;)

I'll see what he thinks about the Irish Tours - he's a Gallagher fan and a HUGE Walter Trout fan.

When i was recording i was so wound up in the beginning i had to calm myself down all the time or i would be way too fast with everything

To me it always was pretty demanding, i am kind of used to a looser kind of playing and when hearing that on tape i often get the jitters allthough in the mix it does fill the track up nicely being the rythm guitar part. So thats also my advice, dont judge your playing untill you hear the mix.

8 tracks in two nights is ALOT, probably you need to get everything exept the solo's and the vocals on recording tonight because the latter take up the most time to perfect and the vocals need to be recorded seperately anyway. Youll need to do a mix also in the studio so thats going to take time also. Best to start with the songs that you all played the most so youll have a good head start with not too many retakes IMO. Also this way you can still do another take on a certain track tomorrow after relistening them tomorrow befor you go into the studio again.

I always had some grape suger tablets(dextrose) and sport drinks with me because i always had problems with my muscles getting tired getting the max out of my playing, maybe a tip to take some of that along, just in case.

I hope this is in any way usefull to you, i hope everything turns out like you want it to be.

An AIV SM with a AIV Mule would be so great! I now have two AIV mules but i think the neck mule is quite dirty compared to the bridge one, but with the SM it would be an awsome match. Hmmm........

Greetings, Henk

Thanks Henk - you've kinda confirmed what I had planned for the two nights and I think what the rest of the band has too.  The iostonic drink thing is a good idea.  I'll pick some up on my way home.........

The only recording I ever did was in my jerry-rigged home studio (a couple of Shure mics, a DI box, lots of cables, and an old Pentium III computer).

It was the middle of summer and to avoid background noises dropping in on the recordings I had the window and door closed, airconditioner turned off, and a bunch of pillows surrounding the computer (has a noisy CPU fan).

I also had a thermometer in there. I spent a couple of hours doing vocals then solos when my voice got tired. When I checked out the thermometer it read 42C, and shortly thereafter I heard a "clank" and the computer crashed.

Turned out that it got so hot in there that the cards in the computer were falling out of their slots, and when I went to get a drink I discovered I was suffering heat stroke and nearly passed out on the way to the kitchen

No moral to the story. Just laugh at me, I guess     Oh, and stay hydrated!

Ha ha - top story!

Well it was great fun, really enjoyed it!  Got 4 tracks laid down, and I've got one on a CD here to noodle over during the day tomorrow.  It's a bit of an epic and I need to come up with about 3 minutes of lead guitar

Early start tomorrow evening, couple of quick fixes to do (not all mine!) and four tracks plus the epic to record.  It may be hard work.....

Ha ha - sorry Martin!  We're recording in one room as a band, and your JTM45 would be too loud in there - it'd bleed into all the other mics.  I could have used it plus the HT Dual but then all you'd hear would be the Dual.  The TT is less hassle  ;)  We're using two mics on my 2x12 - one for the G12H and one for the V30 - and blending them for the mix.  Seems to work pretty well....

I've joined this one a bit late, but just wanted to say nice one !

You must be having an indescribable amount of fun doing what you love.   I can imagine that having to lay out whole new sections of 'new' lead work is quite a challenge too, after having covered Angus for so long.

To think it's being recorded for all time must also be great  !   :D

Keep up the good work  8)
