Tonmeister course at Surrey University
« on: December 02, 2007, 10:27:05 AM »
Hey guys, anyone know much about the Tonmeister music and Sound Recording course at Surrey University?

I'm setting my sights on it for when I'm done with A Levels in a couple of years. Anyone actually done it perhaps?

Any info or opinions very welcome as usual.

I've done/am doing my own research of course but value the opinions of you guys as with everything else music-related.

Cheers,

sam.

P.S. Hi 38th, thanks for noticing me in that other thread.

Cheers for the reply man!

I'm only 16, so not the qualifications yet.

But I've just found a new teacher who has Grade 8 Trinity 'Pick' (electric) Guitar, (one of the two boards that they accept), so that should get me up to scratch in the music department.

And other than that, qualifications wise as long as I get Music, Physics, Maths A-level I'm good right?

Just at the start of sixth form now.

Glad your mate speaks highly of it. At the open day did you find out anything about what impresses them over and above the entry requirements?

I know on the site it says about recording/performing music, reading on audio, fixing/mending equipment e.t.c. But anything else?

I'm meeting with a family friend in a couple of weeks who is on the course at the moment as well, so hopefully can get some more info from him.

Thanks again man, any info is much appreciated.

Might see you at Surrey in a few years.

yeah those are the subjects. i'm at the start of the sixth form too. and i'm doing the same except i'm doing one in music tech too 8) .
anyway the guy i know said look with those subjects for a level and a decent musical knowledge, you'll get an interview and if that goes reasonably well you'll get in.
they have a lot of applicants because it is the only place which does the course in the UK, but i reckon many just want to do a sort of "poly" music tech course and get filtered out.

yeah see you there  :)

Yeah I figured the same thing about the majority of applicants going in with an attitude of getting to make nice music for 4 years.

The hardest part is probably getting as good grades as possible, and that dang grade 7/8!!! grr!

I take it you'll be hoping to apply with electric guitar too?

probably not. i'm doing grade 8 orchestral percussion and grade 7 piano in a few months. just done grade 5 classical guitar, which i REALLY want to crank up to grade 8 before leaving. electric guitar is a hobby for me (but at times, my favourite thing to play).
