Author Topic: warpig vs. dimarzio (Read 6492 times)

So im almost ready to buy my new pickup(s) and im debateing on either probably warpig but maybe nailbomb or dimarzio drop sonic. I will be going back and forth from drop tuning and standard (playing rock/metal/experperimental/other). So im here asking the forum for your insight on what to get. If i can find a good combination I will buy a neck and bridge but if I only get one it will be a bridge pickup. Anyone that has acutually played on the drop sonic or anything like these other pickups let me know how you feel. Thanks

Im putting the new pickups in an Ibanez RG5EX1 by the way.

well im not "expecting" any answer in particular. Im not very savvy on pickups yet. But im assuming BKP's are better than dimarzios because of the price difference

or let me put it this way, what BKP combinations are good for what kind of sounds (staying in the rock and heavier categories). Also what about these Alnico V and Ceramic type pickups, whats the difference/what are they better for.

Never assume that.

I like Dimarzio. I like Seymour Duncans.

However, most people will say that BKP's are highly rated not for price but because every single one is made to order, by hand. Overwound. Underwound. Custom housings. Custom pickups altogether.

You cannot possibly put enough ">"'s between any BK and any dimarzio.

And thats not because of price. Thats because of ears.

its a price/performance trade-off..

i think dimarzios have a great price point and their range is interesting.

but these days i'll fit them, and be happy enough, but always thinking of BKPs. they just have that certain extra clarity and life to them.

my steinberger has a miracle man bridge and a SD '59 neck. the difference is quality is obvious - i'm never touching that SD, even for clean. in isolation, that '59 still sounds absolutely fine though.

Depends on the kind of sound you want. Particularly from the neck I mean.

The sound im trying to get in general is something low and kind of deathy. I want the bridge to play the heavy chords and i guess the neck would be what i want to play the slightly less heavy notes. Id like it to be a bit bassy too.

To be honest (and this is probably not a popular opinion here), you should wait with changing your pickups till you know more about what kind of sound you want. Things like how high an output you want compared to the ones you're currently using, if you want a brighter or warmer tone, if you want it very tight or less tight, if you want lots of mids or a more scooped sound, etc.

agreed. I haven't played my legra for a couple of days, and my duncans in my edwards are actually starting to sound quite nice. once i go back to the legra, though, and then go back to the edwards, it's like "arg, they really aren't as nice, are they?"...

Theres a lot of brand humping that goes on in this forum, the Dimarzio pickups are better than stock pickups, they have a great tone and are used by many, priced accordingly.

BKP's have more harmonic detail and a are a lot more dynamic, if you're after a really compressed shred sound the DiMarzio stuff is fantastic!

I'd like to say BKP sound superior in everyway but it depends on the application, I've owned virtually every aftermarket pickup and a huge variety of guitars and I know what works with what..

Im all for BKP im currently using mules and have previously used the VHII, Miracle Man, Cold Sweat, Warpig, Ceramic Warpig, Nailbomb and Irish Tours..

Each having there own merits, find a sound you really want and speak to tim he'll help you find the right pickups if your budget allows for BKPs.
