That one song

Do any of you have that one song you've always said you're going to learn? I know some of you don't learn other people's music, but there has to be that one song you want to know. I mix it up with writing music, improvisation, playing over tracks, and every now and again learning someone's piece.


For me, since I was a teenager and I heard it for the first time, that song is SRV's version of 'Little Wing.' For about 3 weeks, I've been learning this song and it has given me a new appreciation for SRV's playing. The nuances, the subtleties, the SPEED are amazing. His use of timing, space, volume, restraint, shred, general dynamics are out of this world. Learning the song has made me more aware of the greatness of this piece and I feel it will help me grow a little more. Speaking of speed, SRV can really burn! There's this one open lick in 'Little Wing' where he just completely burns me. Actually, there are a couple of licks that will take time to build to his speed. Monster, MONSTER, I tell you!

Theres also Santanas Smooth, which I think is the song that made me get a guitar in the first place, but I've never learnt any more than the intro.

Tom, that was cool! I've also listened to some of your other recordings. You have a lot of variety in your choice of songs. I dug them all.


The only things I have are original recordings of three songs I did almost four years ago. If you guys want a listen, I'll post the link. I think my brother already posted them a few months back, though.

I've been meaning to learn all of Keeper Of The Seven Keys, by Helloween. I know about 75% of it, but never got around to finishing it. Originally my band was going to play it live, but since it takes up about half of a normal NYC set list (we've never been given more than a 40 minute set) we never got round to it and ended up playing Jawbreaker by Priest instead.

sultans of swing by Dire Straits, lol - i once took a day of school to learn it all. I used to have it down pretty good - although i used a plectrum rather than my fingers, which spoiled the vibe a lil bit

It's a great piece, have learnt most of it myself over the last few months.

For me? I'd say the thing I've allways said I'd learn would be Johnny b. Goode, I'm certain I could play it fine, it's just I never bothered.

My builder still asks me if I've mastered JBG yet, and I allways reply that I'm not ready :P

dadi by Robbie McIntosh band. I love acoustic music played well & it's one of those pieces that when you hear it you go...'OOOO I've so got to learn that' but I've just never got around to it...or get good enough to play it! :oops:

That one song that I never got round to learning used to be Detroit Rock City by Kiss

Now it is Mr Scary by George Lynch

Does this mean I am a better player because I ignore a harder song  :P
