must say i've been practising alot of clean jazz influenced solos recently, really been enjoying doing them!

anyone else a closet jazz fan?

edit: might post some clips actually, seeing as how theres no other way i'll get some feedback on if my noodling round is actually any good.

how can you not like the music that is jazz? you fear the lack of rules, the lack of boundaries. i'm actually working on a new piece i call simply - 'jazz odyssey' - it goes something like this:

skibadee bow do wop skibadee doo!

i'm the scat man! Aoooow!

I am not a closet jazz fan.

I studied "straight ahead" jazz under the master, Dennis Sandole. I've also taken lessons from Joseph Scro and Joe Frederico. I've taken master classes from Pat Martino and Tal Farlow.

I don't like schmaltzy cr@pola that is sold off as 'jazz', but the real stuff, the improvisational genius, is just staggering.

Jazz can loosely be described as 'spontaneous composition', and that's exactly what it is when done correctly.


That being said, I am not a jazz guitarist, and even if I play the notes correctly, the soul isn't there. A real jazzer can smell it a mile off. I'm a rocker at heart, and that passion comes through when I play my own stuff. (I hope it does, anyway)

Speaking of Jazz, I work on the University of New Orleans' campus. I am so tempted sometimes to change my degree, I'm going to school now, from information systems to jazz guitar from the said univeristy.

My brother had Noel Fielding as a classmate at Croydon College, used to play footie together , I never knew util I made a Boosh related comment on the phone to him a while back.......

As for Jazz - not my cup of tea I'm afraid.......it smells funny!

I take lessons from Lenny Breau's son Chet. So needless to say I've become a huge Lenny fan. It can add some very cool elements to your playing even if you're not a big fan of the genre.  8)

I love to listen to Jazz.

I cant play a note of it though. I just dont have the feel for it at all. I think thats part of why I listen to to it: the shear difference to what I naturally play is fascinating.

I never attempted Jazz, but if I would, I would take the 1 hour trek to New Orleans for lessons. Well, 2 hours if you consider the ride home. :D

My Dad is a big fan of Jazz and I was exposed to the music from an early age. He liked the piano mainly and so it tends to be jazz of the Errol Garner, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson era with tons of Count Basie and Duke Ellington and singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. He wa snot into guitars unfortunately though he is far more open to it thesedays.

I do like the jump jazz big band thing that Brian Setzer does and the Little Willies with Norah Jones.

I like a bit of Jazz now and again. I'd like it even more if I could competently play it !

I bought a C.D. by local Guitarist Adrian Ingram ( he has a signature Matamp ) - and it was very tasty on the mellow side.

I greatly admired the chord melodies of the late Joe Pass - and enjoyed the way that Herb Ellis or Wes Montgomery handled the blues.

I'm not as keen on the busy experimental stuff though, however technically impressive it is. I like emotion and melody in music.

Like Ratrod, I also enjoy the Brian Setzer Orchestra for a more upbeat effect.
