Aged nickel hardware
« on: December 10, 2007, 07:43:21 AM »
Has anyone heard of any companies producing aged nickel bridge and tailpieces that can replace stock Gibson hardware? Looking for items to match the aged nickel pups that Tim is making for me. Thanks for any info.

Muriatic acid works great just the fumes.
I've tried lot's of potions , etchant also works , Nickel doesn't seem to like constant temp and humidity change and to be honnest if you can just get it started to dull down it goes of its own accord pretty quickly.
There are however lot's of companies selling aged hardware , it's not dificult to find it on the web. The Les Paul Forum has a million threads about ageing hardware.
till the next time..........

That is certainly the most cost-effective method... but the muriatic acid is just more exciting  :P

muriatic acid is Hydrochloric acid in the UK,  Swimming pool people use it.
To age the parts  get a bucket.  and a smaller container for the acid
put the acid in the small container. put the parts by the side of the small container and cover it all with the upturned bucket. let the fumes have a go and then check the state of ageing, leave them for longer if you want more ageing etc.
Once you've done this wash the parts with lot's of water .. hey presto aged Nickel.
till the next time..........

Do you have any links to parts for sale on net for aged nickel? I looked around and did not come across anything. I think want to buy a set in case I decide to change back to a polished look. Thanks

you can good ones here

http://www.vintagecloneparts.com

i beleive you need to order from www.fatboyguitars.co.uk for the UK dealership

the reason i suggested talking to tim is because that way the hardware would match exactly.  the suggestions above for acid are good but not necisarily the way tim achieves the look.

That's some cool stuff, Wez. Very pricey, though.
