EVH 5150 III

...tried it on Saturday.

It's taken me this long to get over how good that amp is.

At low volumes its nothing major, it sounds alright... good. Never bad, but just good.
Cleans are amazing, pleasing...

then you crank it a little.

HOLY SHHHHHHHHHHHIT

hands down, i mean HANDS DOWN the most exhilarating amplification experience i have ever had... i've played a lot of amps, but this.

Out of this world tones. The second channel is just blissful, the 1st is like the best of the fender clean tones but not to much of the spank, it's still there... just tamed.
The 3rd channel is so percussive for solo's... everything just shimmers. Also the channel switching is instant... literally instant.

Channel 2 is the winner though, so much crunch and clarity it's tear educing. I played that thing for hours with various guitars including a EVH Charvel model (which was easily one of the best feeling guitars I've ever played.) working out a ways to afford it.

The amp sounded great with all of them.

Anyone got £2,000 odd?

You need it with the cab, it sounds 'good' with others... but not the same WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! the speakers are amazing.

This amp seems to be getting a lot of very favourable reviews/reactions from players. I've not tried one, thanx for the detailed explanation!

I had a series of really terrible experiences with the original 5150, and it totally turned me off from Peavey's products.

It looks like they've (he's?) really turned things around now, though.

As Orkestra pointed out, though, it's not cheap!!

The cab has those Heritage series G12M-20s, that would be why it sounds SO good.  The ones in the EVH cab have the stripey EVH magnet covers and are only available in that cab - not as aftermarket spares (according to Celestion).

I'm sure the odd one will find it's way onto ebay though and if you really want that tone, just get the standard Heritage G12M-20.

+1

He moved to Fender and took the 5150 brand name with him.

That's why the 5150 has been renamed the 6505.

I don't think the 5150 I or II is anything like the 5150 III in anything other than name.

once you do, you're opinion of the amp will change... for the better.

I was talking to Dave from Machinehead in Hitchin just before I tried it, he told me when they got them he plugged in and wasnt all that impressed...

as soon as I plugged in I thought, meh nothing special...

then i cranked it. my balls danced around, it was bliss

yeah, same here.

I dislike the 5150's...

they sound like kettles boiling, even when you're playing. Tinny and fuzzy and cold. Not the good kind of cold, sterile cold.

They're acceptable with some from of EQ in the front end, but to me that semi defeats the object.

I was going to get a 5150i, simply because i thought they were the go too amp, tried one and no matter how hard i tried, they sounded poo-pee. No clean $%&#ing channel, Tried the 5150ii... still poo, but with a better kindofdistortednotclean channel. Van Halen must have been off his tits when he designed those.

I have a 5150 II, and prefer it over my dual rectifier, it's just got more balls. Really shines with my warpig.

So i'll probably love the 5150 III if it shites all over the peavey models!

I'm surprised you had that experience with those amps. I absolutely love my 5150-II, and I wouldn't describe it in ANY way as fizzy. Of course I might just be lucky and have a "good" one, or my guitar and speakers might be very well suited to it (well, the speakers are, muahahah!).

Thankfully I'm not currently suffering from GAS, as I just sated my last bout with a 2 x 15 cab which I'm in the process of mucking around with. Long may this GASless existence last!!

I tried one of these mothers out yesterday.... incredible! The clean channel goes from Fendery clean to horns-in-the-air rock out, the 2nd channel goes from crazy to insane, and the 3rd from insane to mental... but still sounds really good. I was quite skeptical of it, but it really blew me away- if i had £1300, i'd get one for sure.

Quite impressed to say the least :)
