String bending
« on: December 12, 2007, 04:15:58 PM »
I'm in a sharing from experience sort of mood this morning. In the last month, I came across this video and realized after 17 years of playing guitar, I never mastered the art of bending properly. My aching fingers were trying to tell me something. Now that I have practiced proper string bending, the pain has gone away and my stamina has improved, as I can more easily bend strings. I in a transition from playing 9 gauge strings to 10 gauge and with this technique, I can now bend heavier strings.

It's all in the wrist and use of the thumb which this gentleman effectively demonstrates. I use to bend from the fingers, probably something I did as a result of trying to play Satriani'ish type licks at blistering speeds. This post is for any level of player, but I hope the new players really learn the importance of proper string bending technique. Save your hands now! Enjoy.

Once I got started, I watched a ton of them. I liked the Texas shuffle one.

After watching about an hour to an hour and a half's worth of videos, I felt enlightened and bloated. It took a few days for all the information to set in.

I've never found string bending a problem. I use 11s on my Fenders and always bend with at least two fingers. Also make sure I bend to the right note, listening to people who don't bend to a note (cough Kirk Hammet cough) is painful...
