2x12 Cabs: Orange vs. ENGL
« on: December 15, 2007, 01:27:47 PM »
At some point in the distant future, I'm hoping to get an extension cab for my Screamer 50 Combo, probably a 2x12 for financial and practical reasons.

Now from what I can gather, Orange and ENGL both make great cabs, and of course with my amp being an ENGL it would make sense to consider a matching cab.

So, any opinions? Differences between general cab quality/sound/construction of the two brands? Alternatives are welcomed as well, but information on these two is specifically what I'm after.

Here are the two models I was mainly looking at:

Orange:

ENGL:

http://www.bandland.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=522

or

http://www.bandland.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=522

That's another point- vertical or horizontal- any real difference?

Oh and also, this sounds a bit odd, but would it be wise to have the Screamer combo on top of a horizontal 2x12 or would that be unhealthy?

Cheers for any advice.

Sam.

From what I understand (rather than personal experience!), both of those cabs are awesome. I've seen and heard orange cabs - very very good, and I gather that the ENGL cabs are about the same in terms of build quality and sound quality.
If you're set on getting V30s, then either of those would do very nicely. I'd personally go for a matching cab (ie the ENGL), and probably horizontal so you can sit your combo on top of it (no that wouldn't be a problem).
In fact, if it was me, I'd probably stick in some G12K-100s, but that's another story altogether :D

Engl cab. K100 speakers.

Vertical - have your Combo sit on top, would look ace.

If you get the vertical cab and want to put you Engl on top then just sell it and get the head version. You might even make a little bit of money since the head is cheaper than the combo.

Cheers guys.

Joe hadn't thought about that (buying the head) but it's a good idea.

I'm gonna get the cab first anyway and then see how it goes after that.

Roobubba, from your experience with Orange cabs, did you think they gave a  lot of bottom end? I say that because when I tried a Rocker 30 combo, at the same volume as the ENGL it would punch me in the chest twice as much. It seemed to have so much power and I wondered if that was because of the hugely thick construction of the cab....?

Also, the K100 speakers. Sell them to me... :D What's good about them? (Broad question I know ).

Cheers guys.

You can't really compare the Rocker 30to the Engl Screamer - if it sounded alot bassier - then it might be due to how treble-y the Screamer is, you can't really know how much of an effect the cab had on that.

The K100s are just pure awesome.

Tight low end speakers, very chuggy, very dark.

Sam
having owned ENGL 2x12 and played some Orange I would say Orange hands down.
The quality and sound is to my ears classier.
Having said that (and not knowing UK prices, and NOT cos have one) I would hold out for a Bogner!
I took my Bogner ported 1x12 apart the other day and was blown away by it's quality!
About 18 capped screws holding back on, all inside painted and full of baffling material (what I call it anyway) , combine that with the porting and it's easy to see why it is such a classy and musical cab. Also, I think most if not all, the front speaker mesh is attached by velcro so you can remove it for recording if so desire.

Yeah obviously I can't make a direct comparison, but I wondered if the huge thick construction aided the feel at all. The sides are like 2 inches thick at least, way bigger than the ENGL.

So K100s would be more of a metal speaker, as opposed to a V30 crunch?

Cheers.

only way to really tell is play them with the amp and desired guitar.
Quality of wood, construction, speaker mounting (front or back) cab back (open/partial/closed) , baffling, ALL make big difference in sound let alone the speaker choice.

Nick, I thought you were joking when I read Bogner...

I don't know the price either but I'm not sure I'd want to!!!

Interesting you should say Orange hands-down, as that was my initial assumption because of what I mentioned about the Rocker 30 being way more punchy and powerful.

Googling Bogner cabs now....

Yep Sammy, thats mine, and trust me with the porting and construction it sounds HUGE, not 1x12 like at all.

Thats prob. bout right for price.

Should have taken some pics when had back off mine, but suffice to say construction and interior had as much attention as exterior, VERY impressed!

If you can eventually afford or find one used it's my suggestion bud!

The ENGL cab I had was so so in my opinion, construction felt cheap compared to say Orange/Bogner and overal 'built to price/looks'.

Anyway, my 'cube' is HUGE sounding for a 1x12 so would imagine a 2x12 would be excellent!

looks like Orange 2x12 is abit cheaper but IMO the Bogner is DEF worth it. Keep an eye open for used one Sam.

Awesome man cheers.  :)

Was surprised to even find that UK dealer for the Bogner actually.

I can get to try the Orange with an ENGL in my local shop, and if it leaves something to be desired then I'll go for the Bogner me-thinks!

Hmmm 1x12 or 2x12 though...

Seeing as I already have a combo would a 1x12 add a significant enough amount to the sound to warrant spending £300 on one?

Personally I'd go with the Orange.

I've never liked ENGL cabs, to me they add a certain 'fizz' to the sound and the highs can sound harsh almost ice picky (i've used an ENGL cab live with a JCM900 I had and tried a ENGL Powerball and Fireball through one). Like the 5150 cabs which I also don't like.
