My 2008 summer holiday, habla espanol
« on: December 19, 2007, 06:38:37 PM »
All,

I am excited about my summer 2008 holiday. This will mark my first trip to Spain, but not my first trip to Europe. Plasencia, Extremadura is the destination with plans to see Madrid and possibly Granada to visit La Alhambra, if time permits. Plasencia is my father-in-law's hometown. My stint in the military and time living in Washington D.C. provided exposure to Spanish, and I speak French (comme une vache americaine) which has accelerated my Spanish learning; I've studied Spanish for about two years, from time to time.
I've recommenced my studying by performing daily exercises in a workbook (Spanish Made Simple), reading a novel in Spanish (La Alquimista by Paulo Coelho), and listening to two hours of Spanish radio commuting to and from work, making it tough not to dance the merengue or salsa, something I'm sure the other drivers are thankful for. I am lucky enough to have a friend from Ecuador who is unremitting in speaking the language to me, being really patient and doing a great job of explaining things. Since he doesn't speak English well, he instructs in Spanish trying many explanations until I understand. Somehow, it works! My goal is to effectively communicate in Spain without having to resort to English.
What I am really looking forward to is living amonst the Spanish. Naturally, since we'll be with my wife's family, I'll be staying with locals and not in hotels, except when going to Madrid or Granada. I've heard so much about Spanish cuisine that I can hardly wait to eat the real thing. Once on a travel show about Spain, I saw this tiny pig cooked in a wood burning stove and it looked delicious. I've had paella (my only Spanish dish), mmmMMMMMM!
Anyway, I've come to the point of this thread, do you fellows know of any Spanish message boards where one can learn/ practice Spanish? Have any of you been to Spain or live/ed in Spain and can you share your experience? If there are any Spaniards here, I'd love to hear about your country.

You are going to have a great time Rojo, lost of party people there, I am from South America, the country that has "un presidente que esta loco de bola". I have plenty of friends that went on to live in Spain, I have lost contact after I moved to the States many years ago.  " El Alquimista "de Paulo Cohelho ( Brazilian ) is a great read. If you can get your hands on the movies by Pedro Almodovar, also there is a book I read years ago   called " Cuentos de la Alhambra " tells the story of the place, El Museo del Prado is a must see. Where did you have Paella? I have not seen one in years, el " Queso Manchego, and jamon Serrano " are mandatory, going out to dance is also mandatory, so start polishing your dancing skills , the "Two steps" from Louisiana is the closest to the merengue you can get. A bien tot.

"Pedro Almodovar"

I saw the movie Volver and it was good. His style and commentary in the bonus scenes were enjoyable.

" Cuentos de la Alhambra "

I'll definitely look into that book. Does it talk about the muslim invasion of Spain from those times?

"Where did you have Paella?"

My wife is European, her father is Spanish and her mother is French. Either when we go to France, or when the in-laws come here, we end up having paella. Where my in-laws live in France, there is a small Spanish population, so my father-in-law still has products from Spain and his people to speak Spanish. There is a lady in that community who makes paella, and for a reasonable fee, she travels to a person's home to make it fresh. Also, my mother-in-law and wife can cook it. My father-in-law has given me exposure to Spanish wines and dried sausages like chorizo. His region of Spain is known for their jamon. I've also had the French varieties of saucisson.

"going out to dance is also mandatory"

Usually when we have dinner with our friends (he's Ecuadorian and she's French) some how we all end up dancing before the night is over (could be the effects of wine), doing the merengue. I'm amazed at how eazy it is to dance to South American music, very rhythmic. His wife has learned to make Ecuadorian food and my favorite, sorry I don't know the name of it, is shrimp cooked in coconut milk.

Speaking of wines, my neighor in D.C. is from Chile and afforded me the opportunity to taste Chilean wines and I have been hooked ever since. I've had wine from Chile, Brazil and Argentina, plan on having others from other South American countries, and the South Americans can give the Europeans a run for their money in wines.

Rojo, lately I have been drinking a red wine from Argentina called "Portal", from the Malbec region , about 15$ a bottle, but it is the quality that is unbelievable. El Chorizo Espanol is the best (to me), every country has their own version, yet similar. I do remember a friend saying that the Imported
version does not contain a certain kind of "Hongo", because the US does not allow it, don't know?. There are some Spanish wine like Albarino, worth trying. Los Cuentos de la Alhambra does tell the story of the Muslim, and Spaniards. See if they can hook you up to a see Futbol game in Madrid. Saludos!

Maybe on the next visit to Europe, not this one because I'll only have two weeks, I'll visit England.

As an American, Europe and the U.K. are enchanting. One really has a sense that time has passed there.
