New nut for Gibson LP Classic - Advice please?
« on: December 22, 2007, 07:18:58 PM »
I'm looking for advice/suggestions on choosing a new nut for my LP.

It's had 7 years play and has had a recent fret job, so I feel that the time has come to replace the nut.

I read a few previous threads here and noted with interest the split between people favouring bone over graphite - and vice versa and also an interesting desription of a brass nut that 'brightened' a guitar tone.

I'd also be very interested to know the merits of bone vs graphite, and perhaps brass as well?

I play mainly Classic rock/Blues. The guitar still has the original (Kluson) tuners, bridge and saddle.

So ... What material and manufacture will do the job for me?

I can hardly hear the difference between different nut materials. I have them in bone, graphite and even plastic. The plastic one can be heard a little but I really can't hear much difference between bone and graphite. The graphite one is a little harder in sound, I think. I mainly chose that one for that guitar because of tuning issues. Graphite lets the strings glide better. For a non vibrato Les Paul you can't go wrong with good ol' bone.

Then there's also Delrin or even old stock ivory.  :o

Tusq is oretty good - I have them on both my SGs.  It's a man-made bone alternative which is nice and slippy.  Made by Graphtec....

Thanks for that.

I'll give both bone and Tusq a look, cheers.

I have used graphite nuts in tremelo guitars along time ago, they slide best IMO. But you dont have a trem so no need for it, Tusk sounds best, maybe bone arguably a bit better but i cant hear a difference at least, well natural bone has the advantage that you can pick the best matching sound by dropping them on a hard surface, more of a thing for the real pros if you ask me, but probably they dont even bother either

I have a Brass nut in my 25/50 anni custom, it gives a bright and unusual deep sound, very 50's gibson custom like IMO, but im not 100% sure since i havent had any other nut in there so i cant compare before and after sound.
Mules in '76 Gibson custom with maple neck.
