what type of pickup in a basswood guitar ?
« on: December 22, 2007, 08:25:38 PM »
I recently purchased the musicman petrucci JP6, i'm not too happy about the bridge pickup (D-sonic), it gets really muddy when i try to push it hard and it's never "penetrating", always in the background if you guys know what i mean.

I'm looking for a pickup that can supply that EMG-81-like/Seymour duncan blackout like sound which rips and kills, question is,  the guitar has a basswood body with rosewood fingerboard so which pickup fits my needs ?

will the warpig ceramic do ?

I play mostly blues/jazz/metal.

TIA

LOL

I believe that was a recommendation for the Miracle Man pickup.

I second that, as well -- Miracle Man!

My warpig (AV) is in a basswood body with a maple neck and rosewood board. It sounds great, not muddy at all. It will do evil chugging metal and some blues and jazz as well. However it is not as atriculated as the Miracle Man.

Well, the Painkiller is pretty much the opposite of scooped..

I have a feeling the C-Pig might be a little over the top if you want to play blues and jazz as well. I have a ceramic Nailbomb in the bridge of my PGM (basswood as well) and it's a awesome metal pickup, but it also gets some great classic rock tones. Maybe worth having a chat with Tim about it.

Basswood is a fairly neutral sounding wood (i.e doesn't impart much tonal colouration), so the characteristics of the pickups make up a large part of the final sound. That's how Tim explained it to me when I was choosing pickups for my PGM anyway.

I got the seymour duncan blackout in the bridge of my warmoth guitar, it's always giving feedback when i don't touch the guitar. it's an awesome pickup though, i LOVE it, except the fact that it has too much high end, but still, i can get jazz/blues whatnot from it.
i guess your hands can do blues/jazz, but only special pickups can do metal :)

so now the final choice

warpig or painkiller ?

Honestly, ask Tim. He knows his own pickups better than anyone else, and I've not heard of anyone being unhappy with his recommendations.

If it were me, I'd go for the Painkiller, but that's because I've wanted one for ages..

lukather? alnico pig as he uses an alnico emg...
but his tone is VERY "plastic", so i think you should try the ceramic for a less smooth sound

Take a shot at McFly while you're at it.

Yes, Lukather uses an EMG85. I never tried that particular pickup but alot of people say the Alnico Warpig sounds very similar.

CWP set would do those (a bit of a push at blues though; more suited to a heavy Cream/early Led Zeppelin blues). Excellent jazz/metal pups though.
