QuickTime - Advice needed.

I've happily avoided having QuickTime anywhere near my PC for years but I bought my daughter an ipod for Christmas and basically QT needs to be installed.

I've managed to set the preferences, so that Windows media player still opens up existing saved files - MP3, MPEG etc .... but no matter what I do I can't stop QT from being the default medium when opening MP3, MPEG's etc - when the files are on a web page.

Can anyone assist, in helping me stop QT being my default online medium for accessing multmedia?

From firefox, it is - Tools > Options > Content > File Types > Manage

If you use IE there should be something similar

Try this, open media player.

Tools
Options
File Types

Check the appropriate, and apply. That should re-set the defaults.

Also see if the quick time launcher is in the system tray (icon next to the clock), if this is running it might be hijacking the defaults to play files. You can stop it loading at startup in the preferences somewhere.

Thanks for that.

I've set all the appropriate file types before but it doesn't stop QT from always opening online files. I think that it must be running in the background as you say Ailean.

I'll reinstall it and see if I can disable it at startup.

Mine says QuickTime, but I haven't updated it in 6 months. If it says its by Apple Inc, it should be

If quick time is running in the background their will be an icon in the system tray, right click that and select preferences. Or just run quicktime from the Programs menu and access the preferences from their. Look for the file associations and uncheck any your are unsure about, and uncheck the 'tell me if quicktime is not the default player'.

I've had QT take over the defaults before now, but re assigning them in Media Player has always worked for me. (It will take over the defaults on an upgrade as well I think).

Now sorted  :)

This will sound stupid but previously I had gone into WMP and checked that all the file types were correct ... WMP to play MP3,MPEG etc ... and QT still opened up online MP3 and MPEG.

So I deselected all the file types in WMP and then simply reselected them - which worked.

My WMP is now the default player and I still have QT installed.

The laziest way is

Start => Set Program Access and Defaults => custom => Default media player

And has worked for me in the past (quicktime & itunes are like a dose of something nasty that won't go away)

If it's only for putting music on the iPod then I would suggest using Media Monkey (version 3) as it works on almost all MP3 players.

You may need to uninstall quicktime and reinstall, while making sure that it is NOT associated with MP3 and MPEG.

Ahhh... yeah I forgot to mention that trick.  :oops:  Sometimes you have to persuade programs that you have changed something or it will think it doesn't need to apply the settings.

Sorry I could have saved you some pain. But at least it's working :)

iTunes and QuickTime are pretty decent programs at what they do, they might not do what YOU want them to do, but that is another issue.
