I got a set of Mules for Xmas. Verdict: Everyone should have at least one guitar loaded with these pickups, they're f*cking brilliant.

Yes, they are rather good aren't they ... :)

What for you makes them so special as compared to your other BKPs ?

Just curious...

Dammit, I was hoping not to have to substantiate my statement.

I play metal and after years of using high output pups, various musicians, including people on this forum, inspired me to try something different. So as Xmas was coming I asked for a set of Mules from the missus (turned up Xmas eve - thanks Tim!).  The Mules have a big, warm, open sound tnat really works for me and my music. They handle fast muted riffs extremely well, have tons of sustain and prove you don't need a Miracle Man for squealing pinched harmonics. The sound from the neck pickup makes you want to solo for hours.
I also enjoy not having to try so hard to control the feedback when using a high gain amp.

They also make me want to use the clean channel on my amp, which I've never really enjoyed with any pickup other than the neck SD '59 which was previously installed in this guitar (which is good, but not as good).

Incidentally , these pups are fitted to a Washburn WI65C and I use an ENGL Fireball.

ENGL Fireball = Sex

I'm intrigued about these Mules, but my next lookie would be a calibrated set of either Miracle Man or Nailbombs with a Single pickup.

But still, it's nice to hear a happy customer, I am one too seeing as I got mine in time before Christmas. :)

Nice to hear more good things about Mules.

They are my next BKP's and will be going into my '94 Epiphone LP.

I agree-recently dropped a mule into my LP Custom-my tone became so much bigger-and I play a BEAST of a high gain amp-mesa boogie mk IIC+ Coliseum thru a wall of EV  speakers(300 plus watts if needed)-I am convinced after the last year and a half that the mid output pups allow for so much more-punch,clarity,percussive "bite"..
-reminds me of Adam Jones(Tool) and T Morello...huge tone, but not a very distorted one-more headroom/less compression lets me really push around some air!-I agree...everyone needs some Mule
"...major scales...what's that??"- Doug Aldrich
-Rebels,VHII, Mules,Milks,Bombs,and Boogie C+'s!!

My mules ended up in a custom gibbo, they are just such a tight package that way, and youll get such a huge tone, trashing mids and endless sustain. The clean has a perfect PAF signature, i have the bridge setup that it screams full out and i can just roll back the tone a bit for a perfectly balanced clean, mine are unpotted though. The neck is my clean to dirty lead tone, i switch to bridge lead at high gain settings, there is just so much articulation and dynamics there you just keep playing for hours.

One tip i think anyone should try out seriously with mules on high gain amps, boost the signal to amp a bit with an OD or distortion, its like tossing your meal in a deep PHAT fryer.

Still, if you ask me what kind of music makes the Mules really shine, it is really a more comtemporary blues or jazz/fusion style, with just a bit of nastyness to the tone.

Then there is offcourse the big advantage you have from the clarity gain you get from the mules, especially when recording or when you play trough heaps of effect(especially those tone sucking digital ones) it will really take the blanket off your sound.

Just too much coolness not to try them really, something i like to add also is that Tim makes a wonderfull low noise unpotted but covered mule which is wax sealed under the cover to prevent micophonics, mine are way more feedback proof than the gibson stock pickups i had in the custom before the mules.

PS. You can save yourself some time and put them in the Gibbo right away Machinehead

I have to say; i have experimented with most of the BK range in most different types of guitars with loads of different amps (which is why im always really really really poor)

I'm in to pretty much anything rock and play a lot of heavy and melodic stuff - best combination (for tone):

Les Paul loaded with Mules into JCM 800 - How stereotypical is that!
HUM: RR, M, SM, VH2, EM, BD,CS, CR, HD, NB, WP, RY, SINGLE :IT, SH, p90: MQ

That to me makes sense.

I've been saying this for years (well, since I got my Mules at least, but it must be about 2 years now surely!) :) I find that I can use my Les Paul for anything and itl sound good and dont really see the point in anything much higher output!

edit - yes I just checked previous posts, I got my mules in June '05 :o

I agree, the Mule is without a doubt the best pickup i've ever played.. so perfectly balanced. closely followed by the VHII, but the VHII has a very distinct sound and isnt as versitile.
