I think this clip of him from 1994 puts it all in perspective ....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_lwocmL9dQ

It does - I take back what I said about not seeing any good live EVH clips (although I did get quite bored - not a fan of unaccompanied guitar solos).

The changing face of EVH!     1994:

And 1998:

I like the '94 clip where he's playing the Music Man - it seems more musical somehow, less like showing off.  And I liked that short hair/beard/few extra pounds period (probably because he looked a bit like me!    ).  He seemed more relaxed and comfortable in those days, like he had it all together for a while.

Wow, that makes me wanna dig out my Axis and give it an extended wank.

He does look more Zen, within his inner  balance, as you say Philly.

If you feel obliged to commit the sin of Onan, by all means go ahead.

I used to have an Axis Sport.  I don't regret selling it really, but it was probably the best-made guitar I've ever owned.

Saddens me to say it, but Eddie's playing on the most recent vid was shockingly bad. The section from Eruption at the end sounded like it does when I try to play it, and I'm the most useless shred/technical/tapping player I've ever heard.

The way he was stumbling about the place, combined with the playing quality, makes it look like he was drunk. It's a real shame.

If I'd gone all the way to the USA to see that, I'd be too pissed off for words.

Sad to see him back on the drink it seems :( it but it's not an easy habit to kick, most people in that situation have relapses.

However I would be so pissed off if I had travelled so far to end up seeing that performance

I couldn't watch past the first  - well I'm not even sure what to call it - tuning up without tuning?! :(

I bet EC is glad camera phones didn't exist when he was gigging flat on his back! Lets hope this was a momentary aboration by EVH, such a a waste of such a phenominal talent...

What about the rest of the gig, was he any better, or was it all like this?

he sounds like rotten egg in this clip, and he's drunk as a skunk! Hasn't he had cancer?

Yeah apparently he blames holding metal guitar picks in his mouth rather than smoking

Not only that but claims to have found a cure as well. Some illegal out of the country treatment that's a big secret.

Which would explain why he is drinking again. I know I would if I was diagnosed with the big C. He was still smoking last year. There's a saying once a smoker always a smoker. They are so hard to give up. I've been off them for nearly two weeks now and it's proper $%&#in horrible, but so is C. I hope the man beats it all. He gave us all so much. He is only human.

Don't disagree, but he was supposed to have cleaned up his act after the cancer "cure".  Let's hope he doesn't go totally off the rails again.

The thing is with addictions there is so much delusion to overcome.
