Folks,

I want to try and change the speakers in my amps to get the tightest, snappiest, punchiest tone I can.

I was thinking V30?

What do you think?

Amps are TSL602 (so I can change both speakers to different things if need be, or change one speaker and use that one for recording, which is what this is to improve) and Engl Screamer combo (needs re-tubing first, but I can always try the new speaker in that too)

Or do you think a closed back cab would give me more benefit?

You need a closed back with V30s. A V30 on it's own would help a lot though. A pair might be too honky, so I'd dump one G12T-75 for a V30 and see how you like it....

Yeah I would think closed back would be optimal for recording. Speaker-wise I'm clueless however.

Doesn't your Screamer have a V30, or were they not fitted in the older models?

In my opinion, closed back is better for recording. My cab has a detatchable back and when recording with the back off, its much thinner and weaker.

Depends, if you have a second mic for the room, the opposite may be true. I quite like V30 in open back cabs.

If you wanna go real topend, get a Celestion Gold 50W, they are pretty awesome. Not for metal, but anything else ...

You can reinforce the bass end alot by placing the amp flat against the wall or in the corner of the room.

For the style of metal you play I'd say you can't go far wrong with a V30.

now for something completely different-I love EV m 12 L speakers--sooo efficient andreproductive of your sound-not sure about your wattage-my amps are tight and punchy, but its a boogie coliseum (180 watts-evs are rated at 200 wts a piece-I play thru 3 evs and 3 c 90's-a nice balance-)but, an ev/closed back cab is absolute and unforgiving-yessir! :P

That's my opinion anyway. Last night and band practice, those puppies were sounding SO DAMNED GOOD! Exactly what you described: tight, snappy and punchy.

The CL 80's will do that.

However, you could just go with the best speakers ever made and skip 20 years of agony and frustration trying to invent the wheel again......

You know im talking greenbacks i hope.

Or as a 'best of two worlds', go with the G12H heritage, but then again, why compromise when you know you want the best :roll: :lol:

I considered GB's, henk (I like their tone in some A/Bs I found), but the wattage is too low.

V30s are imminent.

Greenbacks aren't tight enought for me. I like a combination of V30/G12H.
