Pickup for stoner rock/metal
« on: January 13, 2008, 02:22:32 PM »
Right the SG is now getting better, i set the action so now it is playable and the Gibson pickup sounds good at low volumes, however when i crank the Laney that is when the pickup sounds thin.

I'm in a stoner rock/metal band so guitar riffage is the key to success. Though since i have tried the lower gain Black Dogs as opposed to what i usually go for (the contemporary section) i have found that i prefer lower gain pickups.
I was originally planning a SG P90 thing and going to put a Mississippi Queen in there but then i spoke to someone and they said it wouldn't coil tap so well as it was too low gain.
I need a pickup that isn't going to lose the tone when it is at high volumes and perform well under a fair bit of fuzz on it.

I was thinking maybe a Crawler?

Any help is appreciated!

Abraxas ay, i haven't heard much from them but i'll go on the players forum and see what there is in terms of clips.

Oh yeh forgot to add it needs to coil tap well.

Yeah, i love stoner too, and my Crawlered LP does it more than well... The key is to have Very fat mids/low mids, and the crawlers have plenty of 'em... they rispond really well to volume and tone pots too.
And splits sound are great....
Crawlers are the way forward IMO.
I started my own record label.
It's called Stand Out Records.
We ONLY use Bare Knuckle Pickups...

I would recommend a pair of Rebel Yells.  Enough power with tons of mids and more of a vintage vibe.  I get a nice Kyuss/QOTSA vibe on the bridge with the tone rolled off half way!

The only thing i'm worried about with the Rebel Yell is it's amount of treble, stoner rock and metal is usually quite dark and dingy and the Rebel might not be what i'm looking for.
Would you be able to do a clip or something, that would be awesome if you could. :D

Like Sabbath/Orange Goblin/Electric Wizard/Priestess kinda thing. The only problem with the pig is that it might be too high output, most stoner bands use more vintagey stuff than monster output. I would get a Mississippi Queen or a Mule but i don't know how well they will coil tap as they are low output.

i disagree
i see a lot of these bands using strong output pickups like gibson 500t, duncan invader, tom anderson h3+, gibson iommi

the alnico pig is not ultra hi gain
sounds like a slightly boosted holy diver
using the volume knob you can easily dial off the high output

how about a Pig90 version of the MQ? - I'm sure you can get a coil tapped version if you ask Tim nicely.

out of curiosity, why is it so important that the pickup can coil spit nicely? - you're playing Stoner stuff FFS  :?

btw, I have a Black Dog in my Explorer tuned to C and it sounds fanastic for Stoner/Doom riffage.

Because i need it to be versatile it's not just a stoner metal axe. If i didn't need it i would have got a Pig already
I have Black Dogs already too so i don't really want it again (even though it rules)

Has anyone coil tapped a Pig before? If so how much output does it cut off, is it good for clean work?

You could always try a series/parallel switch rather than a coil-split (that's what I have on my SG-X).  It can give quite a dramatically different tone on high output pickups.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

A Crawler would do the job perfectly. It was your original thought and that may be just right. Otherwise a fat P90 like the Pig90 would also work great it you dig Iommi´s early sound.

I think the Crawler is a great way to go as it covers everything i need, though still in the back of my mind i know the Pig will be better for the high gain stoner action. I'd say it's between those 2, i'll have a think and listen to some clips and we'll see what comes out of it.

Cheers for the suggestions guys :D
