Mule for Dark Metal?
« on: January 19, 2008, 06:08:25 PM »
Ok, I'm currently in the process of selling my Schecter Hellraiser (with EMG's - Its been a long process of selling off/ on etc!). Anyway, I'm hopefully going to pick up a Burny Les Paul and I've been thinking of what pickups to go for (bridge mainly, I'm set on a Mule for the neck). I don't want to annoy Tim yet as I'm not quite in a position to buy. Basically I'm looking for a very open and organic sounding pickup that is erring on the darker side. I'm also looking for something that sounds 'big' despite being fairly low output and needs good mids! I'll be running it through an Engl Fireball which I guess is a bit of a strange pairing, but I feel I need lower output pups for recording and something more soulful than the EMG's. My style is melancholy prog rock/metal with hints of folk   . Oh yeah and dropped to C# standard. What do we think?

That may be a little overkill.... not quite what Mules were designed for, but if you can pull it off with super quiet pickups...

I am not saying it can't be done, just not the way I'd go.

I would probably look at Crawlers.... a little more output.  Or maybe Black Dogs even... dark but not as loud as the Crawlers.
Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.
