Replacement Pups for a Gibson Blueshawk
« on: January 20, 2008, 06:24:02 PM »
Hello

I'm thinking of replacing the pups in my Gibson Blueshawk.  This guitar has what gibson call a dummy coil. If I change the pups with larger output ones will the dummy coil still work the same way?

I suppose in it comes down to do coils have to have the same output to be humbucking

Cheers

i assume you'd be putting p90's in?  there aren't any other pickups quite like the blueshawks, which are p90 size but with magnetic polepieces like fender singlecoils.  the dummy coil is only there to kill hum, but it also reduces the treble content, if you can live with a little hum p90's have a fatter sound anyway so you could just disconnect it.  although if you leave it in the circuit it should work in pretty much the same way as with the original pickups,

i have to ask, why do you want to change them?  i think they're great pickups, a fairly unique sound, like a fat tele or a fendery SG. it's a great little guitar too, i was sad to see Gibson discontinue it.
cry HAVOC!! and let slip the pigs of war!!!

Thanks Blue

You have got me thinking, it might be that I got this guitar all wrong.

I got it secondhand and know next to nothing about it, I saw it really cheap as the finish was abit bashed up and just the quirkyness of the shape and the fact that I had almost exactly the right amount of money in my pocket kind of made up the decision for me.

Anyway I've always thought that this should sound something like lp junior or something like that. I suppose the name was probably a bit of a clue.

Well I'm going to do what I should have done a couple of months back when I got her and see what I* can find out about her on the web.

Cheers again
