I'm new and need some advice please!
« on: January 26, 2008, 08:54:18 PM »
THis is probbaly a question that has been asked, and answered, a million times already. I'm currently upgrading my '57 reissue strat and want some pickups that have a bit of life about them - it doesn't cut through the mix very well especially when compared next to my tele.

I am currently torn between the Apache, Irish Tour and Mothers Milk sets. I play rock with a bit of clean stuff every now and then. Which of these sets are most versatile in your opinions?

I'm so indecisive that I will probably go for the pick ups with the most mentions on this post after a week - now that's trust in my fellow forum members!

Thanks,

Ian.

Welcome Ian, I can only really comment upon Apaches (of the 3 types you mentioned) as I have had mine for nigh on 2 years and have gigged and recorded. They are extremely versatile in my view. They have the lovely chimey cleans but can dish the dirt when called upon. Apaches are vintage Strat tones and will give you that good old traditional tone. The MMs are reminiscent of late 1960's Strats and the IT's..well think Rory Gallagher of course but the names are just a guideline to give you an approximation of the vibe. I absolutely love my Apaches-in fact I have just got in from a nice close by local gig and I had a wonderful tone tonight and everything came together very nicely indeed. One of the punters came up to me after the show and raved about the tone of my guitar/amp-Apache laden US Strat and a Laney VC30 2x 10.

That will help you TONS!

It has the clips of Mothers Milk, Irish Tours and Apaches in the same Strat

Filth, Clean, Dirt. What you are looking for. Check it out! And don't forget to thank HJM for the clips.

Well done Jonny, I thought of that thread after I'd posted and gone off line. Ian, as Jonny says, that will give you a good idea.

I second what's been said about Apaches. They are the Mules of Single Coils  :)

For increased versatility I recommend the nickel base plate for the bridge pickup, as it adds punch and drive while keeping the open character of the pickup.

Cheers Hunter. My next question was going to be about nickel plates - you've answered it for me!

Does anyone know what sort of price I should be looking get for the set of pups (pre-wired with pickguard etc) from my US '57 reissue?

Cheers all - I love his forum!

If you sold the current ones on your '57? Is this a way to cut down the cost of the BKP set you'll be getting?

RE-EDIT: Hmm. Can't find a price online now.

Jonny - absolutely. Might not be the wisest thing to do but I have no plans to sell the strat on. I used to buy guitars and sell them maybe a year later - I learnt that this wasn't the best use of cash and resolved never again to sell a guitar!

Forgot to say thnaks to Jonny and 38th Beatle for their welcomes and useful advice - it really is appreciated. I'll give the sound files a listen later today but it sounds like apaches are the ones to go for so far.

I very well might have to, one amp with five guitars. I'm sure I can sell one and improve my amp, lol..

But yeah, I can't find a price for a '57 set. I wouldn't sell them though, if I don't have the money I would just wait.

I've been there Jonny. Used to have about 8 guitars but a cr@ppy amp. I now find myself with one good amp and two nice guitars! I may have to see what stuff I have lying around the house that can be ebayed. Might take a while to get up to the money I need for the apaches - just adding up the options on custom covers, nickel plates etc and it's getting more expensive by the second!

just leave out the prewired ... it's quite easy to make on strats anyways ...
