Extension cab question

Good morning everyone. Can somone tell me what an extension cab will do for me? I have a 5w amp (mentioned in the low power amp thread) and have been told that if I want to gig with it I should really get an extension cab - if I did this will it give me more volume? Will it give me more headroom or will it just make it louder without affecting how the amp would sound without a cab?

I'm not techincally minded at all so don't understand if there would be benefits to this - I currently mic it up to the pa if I need more volume.

Is what I go by, for 'gigging'. But that's for combos roughly.

You can hook up your combo amp, into a cabinet. Or buy a head and connect it to the cabinet. The sound going through the cabinet is still changed (It isn't just louder) because of the speakers used, you can have Celestions, etc. and the cabinet itself.

With a 5W I would suggest upgrading to a Head and Cabinet, it might be a load to transport around but it's better than hooking it up to a cabinet. It's better left at home.
