Import Dean Guitars
« on: January 27, 2008, 03:08:33 PM »
Hey guys.

I've decided that I'm going to indulge my 'V' GAS and pick 1 up.

A few years ago (about 6 or 7 I think) I had a Korean Import Dean ML and it was a dreadful guitar (bad fretwork, it felt really cheap and nasty etc). In my search for a V I've come across a few that I quite like the look of, and it looks like they're alot better import guitars now than they used to be. No shops around here stock Deans at the minute, so I can't really try 1 for myself.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience with them or any other suggestions I could check out? I'm also watching a few Gibson and Epi V's, so Dean aren't my only option I know, but they look quite nice for the money :)

They can be pretty nice but chose carefully as I had a Dean explorer in that had a very rubbery neck - it was way too flexible and caused no end of buzz

We ended up refretting it with a fretwire that had a larger tang (the bit that goes into the board that you don't see) to help stiffen up the neck by ensuring that the fret slots were packed as tightly as they could be.

Probably a one off but worth looking out for.....

Hi Jonathan.

Thanks for the heads up :)

Does anyone else have any other opinions or suggestions for me?

Cheers.

I would chip in £20 more for the trans black finish - awesome.

But, I haven't any knowledge of Deans but if it's from Guitar Village, then hopefully be rest assured that it would be a good guitar, in that there wasn't anything wrong like Jonathan has mentioned.

Thanks for your reply.

Do you mean this 1?

I found this 1 after I'd posted my original thread, I actually really like the look of this guitar :)

Cheers for your opinions :)

At the minute, I'm kinda tied between the Black and White Gold Deans and an Epi V I've found that already has a set of MMs in it.

I s'ppose it all comes down to what look I want :)

The white one is awesome but then again so is the black, i think it comes down to what music you play with it haha.

don't know if it helps at all, but i just recently was a guitar center and tried out a few ML's and razorbacks. only played each for a couple seconds, we were in a hurry. but my first impressions were that they all felt nicer and more comfortable than my gibson vee.

If you can find a czech one on ebay then go for it, they are very well made, some prefer them to the USA deans. If your going for a new import then the 79 series are good ones, i have one of those and its right up there with my USA dean, maybe i just got lucky, mines a bit older now tho so im not sure if the quality is the same i havent tried an import dean since i got the TC. They have moved factories so the quality may have gotten better or worse. good luck.

Hey guys.

Cheers for your opinions :)

I've missed alot of the Gibby Vs I was looking at (auctions ending early with no sales, very strange) and have been thinking about the Deans and I reckon it comes down to either the White Gold, the Black Gold or the Black Epi V with MMs in the Trading Post :)

I'm still gonna keep my eys open for Gibbys in the mean time, but think I'm about 80% sure whichever 1 I get will be 1 of the 3 I just mentioned :)

Bear in mind, the white Dean V has only a bridge pickup. So you either want to be versatile or not.

If not: then you have a winner (the white one)

If so: then you have an Epiphone and a Dean to contemplate over.

'Versatility' isn't such a big requirement from this guitar really, as I have enough guitars to cover pretty much every base I'll need, I just want a V for something a bit 'out of the ordinary' from what I currently have :)
