My SG Pots
« on: January 27, 2008, 08:18:23 PM »
Recently people have found their SG pots are not 500k but 300k, so i had a look in my SG, and i haven't seen any like this before.

Anyone know what they are likely to be?

Cheers, Joe.

Nope it's an SG-1 from some time in the 90's, the switch is a coil tap switch because it only has 1 pickup.

You can't tell pot values just by looking, you'll need to test them.  I'd gues at what sgmypod says though  ;)

is there not a number engraved on the housing? I think normal CTS or Alpha pots do ...

I don't know about the pot values, but it's interesting to see that pic.

My '99 SG-Xs both have the flat-backed pots (I think they're CGE) with "Gibson" logos engraved on them.  I guess they changed suppliers during that couple of years.

yeah was similar time(mine was a 89-90 sg with horrible bill lawrence muddy pickups on)
but you can test pots(have to be disconected) for values(as I remember you use a multimetre test the two outer prongs on the pot)

Hmmm interesting, well i'm get a bkp soon and i'll see how it sounds, if i'm not happy with it then i'll change to some 500k's (if what adammato says is true that they are all 300k)

We tend to get a bit carried away in these Gibson threads, as if 300K pots are some kind of terrible plague.

But - assuming my Gibsons have 300K pots - I'm not sure I'd want the Riff Raff in my SG-X or the Rebel Yell in my The Paul to sound any brighter than they do already.

I think I've got 300k pots in my '61 reissue.  Combined with the stock '57 classics they sound fine to me - I ain't changing anything!

Same here TF, '57 + 300k pots in Gibson SG = fine

The classic plus bridge i have in it bottoms out pretty heavy though, kind of weird wreckingball tone, still undecided on that one.

Aye, the 300k pots are fine with lots of pickups, even my Ceramic warpigs sounded good with it. But it really shines with the 500k one. Let's just the right amount of treble through
