Amp making popping noise
« on: January 30, 2008, 08:24:50 PM »
A bit of advice needed. Just hand a band rehearsal and my amp was playing up. Basically when switching between clean and overdirve channels the amp was making a loud popping noise. I don't remember this happening before and wasa wondering if this is normal behaviour for a valve amp? The footswitch that was provided with the amp was being used (Amp is a Laney LH5T112).

Anyone thoughts on this? I only got the amp about 6 weeks ago so reckon I'll be taking it back to the shop!
I think I hate being indecisive.

Nearly all amps do it to some extent - some have channel switching designs that are poorly executed, hence the popping.  Believe it or not, the worst amp I've ever owned with this problem was a Fender Tonemaster head - that's a £1500 Custom Shop head (probably even more now).

Does the noise seem to have got worse all of a sudden? - could be a dodgy relay.

When you get started, try changing channels a few times to discharge the static?

Tried changing the channles a few times when getting started but doesn't seem to make a difference.

The noise does seem to have got worse quickly - I really don't remember it happening before although I do play mainly through the clean channel and use a fulltone ocd for drive.

I think I'll pop down to the shop (guitarvillage.co.uk) and try one of the same model and see if that does it.

Thanks for the comments - much appreciated.
