I know the population of this forum is chiefly british but has anybody been watching/paying attention to the campaigns?  If so, who do you think is the best candidate?

I haven't been following closely enough to claim a truly informed opinion, but from what I've read and seen Clinton, Obama or even McCain are bound to be a vast improvement on Bush.

I like the simple fact that America may be on the verge of electing its first black President or its first woman President.  History in the making.

all the while completely ignoring silly things like policy.

it's a multi-multi-multi million dollar poularity contest, like american idol except it affects the lives (in an actual live or die way) of hundreds of millions of people all around the world.

it can also be hard work trying to detect any actual democracy.  they do say people get the leaders they deserve, looks like there aren't many countries deserving of good ones.  hmmm, i'm told the guy on the Isle Of Man (is it the Alderman?) is quite good...

True, but is there likely to be any significant difference in policy?  We've reached the point where it's no longer possible to distinguish between the main parties in the UK, and my impression is that it's always been that way in the US.

The difference is that in the US you have to have more money than Roman Abramovich to start a campaign in the first place.  And you can still destroy an opponent's campaign by picking apart their Vietnam record, branding them a "liberal" (gosh, how awful!) or suggesting they're a less-than-100%-committed Bible-thumper.   And again Britain seems to be drifting in the same direction...

The best we can hope is that the next President isn't a simpleton who thinks he gets instructions from God.  And looking at the likely winners from this bunch of candidates, I don't think any of them are.

yeah that's all true, and as you say, we aren't too far behind!

the lack of real democracy comes from the fact that you have to be super rich to run.  it's basically a feudal society except people get to choose which out of touch lunatic sits at the top table for the next four years!

it's also pretty ironic that Arnold Schwarzenegger has really quite left wing (for America) policies, yet he's on the Bush side, giving his support to John McCain. (i'm sorry, i can never remember which ones are republicans and which are democrats).  only another term to go and Arnie might make a run himself!!  :P

course here in Northern Ireland we get tribal politics, where policies are completely irrelevant, people just vote for their side, and nothing can get get done because one petty, moronic group will always vote against the other petty, moronic group, even if they agree on the policy!!

and relax....

I believe he's ineligible because he wasn't born a US citizen.  Otherwise I'm sure he'd have run by now!

Like Philly Q said, the US might be choosing either a woman or a black man for predident. That could be a turning point in history.

Now I only hope the average US voter chooses with common sense. But I'm afraid common sense isn't that common.

Funny story: Hillary chose 'When The Lady Smiles' by the Golden Earring as her campaign tune. She got alot of flack for that because, in the video, the singer kisses a nun. Only in America can bible thumping rednecks go berserk over something futile like that.

i'm pretty sure that's right, but i remember talk of new legislation allowing you to run if you've been a citizen for a certain length of time.

America may be the home of the modern religious nut, but there have been plenty of similar cases over this end of the paddling pool.

there was the huge furore over the british television showing of Jerry Springer: the musical, all to do with blasphemy. Thousands of people who'd never seen it, and in fact didn't even know what was in it, lodged complaints and held protests. various politically correct rants and ravings about possible offence that may or may not have been taken by ethnic minorities who hadn't taken any notice until the politically correct brigade told them they should be offended!  and that film maker Van Gogh was murdered in Holland by a Muslim fanatic, which is more extreme but another example of how religious extremism is encroaching on our lives.  we daren't criticise anyone for fear of being labelled a bigot.
