DOD 250/MXR Dist+ tone, but quieter?
« on: February 02, 2008, 01:06:01 PM »
I'm currently using a DOD 250 preamp/overdrive as a solo booster on my pedalboard.  I love the fat tone it gives, with extra harmonics, but it's a VERY noisy pedal in operation.

Is there anything similar on the market that's quieter?

Can't say it'll sound the same but the Xotic BB preamp is very quiet and has a great tone.

Ha ha - funny you mention that, I was wondering how it sounded!

I'll also look into the Analogman 250 or a BYOC kit maybe?

the opamp in that pedal is a LM741 - it's pretty noisy but responsible for the tone.  you could try some other single opamp chips (TL071 and NE5534 come to mind) and replace the resistors with metal film ones to keep the noise low as possible.

I've got an Electro Harmonix LPB-1 booster which is ok. It's actually pretty quiet and adds a good deal of clean boost. I have used it before my SD-1 and it adds a nice bit of sustain. Also very cheap so it won't set you back.
