What's the deal with Epiphone LPs?  Lots of guys on this forum seem to rate them - I've never played one, are they close to Gibsons?  I guess that they're more than just a cheaper clone...

From my experience with modern gibbos and epis..

I think Gibson is sitting too proudly on the high chair (you can either think of that as a throne, or a baby's chair), I don't see why they don't make 24 fret ones, etc. but it seems Epiphone are catching on. But Epiphone are part of Gibson.. *shrugs*

I started a Tokai LP, weighed a ton, but it was made in China so it looked like the bottom end of a car after driving through some mud and having birds shite on the rooftop. Oh, and with a parking ticket too.

Bloody awful, in other words. Doesn't make me think any less of Tokai however.

Those Prophecies look superb.

I love that matte finished quilt tops - Really a nice change to the normal high gloss.

On the subject of Epi LP's being better than Gibson LP's ?.......... Not a chance.

Better price but you get what you pay for and I have a Gibson and an Epi LP.

I think Gibson are getting sloppy, not completely shite. Just sloppy.

I played 9 new off-the-wall Gibson LP's in January, in my hunt for an amp. Each one was well set up, finished to a high standard and had very nice tone.

I would certainly agree that Gibson have had QC issues but if the latest examples are anything to go by, it would seem Gibson are moving in the right direction.

Gibson vs. Epiphone is a ridiculous argument. Two completely different price brackets. If you are looking to buy an efficient and dependable vehicle, do you think you'll find yourself wandering around in the Ferrari dealership parking lot? Absolutely not. Epiphone Les Paul's are what they are. You get the beautiful Les Paul frame with some hardware that gives you some room to experiment with and upgrade. If you are going to buy a Gibson Les Paul, than you are in the market to make an investment in a high quality instrument. And those of you who talk about Gibson quality control need to understand that if you are going to spend over 2 grand on a guitar, than you better make sure it is setup and ready to go before you leave the shop. I mean, are you guys really dropping that kind of money on a guitar that you get in the mail?? I have owned several Gibson Les Pauls and have loved every one of them. With that said, whatever I found wrong with it AT THE SHOP I had fixed. Setup, fret dressing, whatever. This has always been offered to me at no extra cost. I mean, you are dropping quite a bit of cash on a guitar. Would you buy a brand new car that doesn't run properly?
With that said, I love my Epiphone Les Paul. Granted it has been wholly upgraded and is not the same guitar I bought. They are absolutely playable out of the box and a tremendous value for the price. I personally love what Epiphone is doing with their new line of amps and guitars.

I like that red prophesy Les Paul.

Oh, and if you want a semi hollow Les Paul, go for the original and get a Gretsch Jet.

If that's an example of an Epiphone, I want one!  It looks amazing!

Didn't mean to invoke a "brand war".  My reasoning was that lots of guys on here play Epiphones, and I reckon that you lot know a thing or two about guitars.  Just wanted to learn more, that's all.
