Sustainer/Feedback pedals
« on: February 03, 2008, 10:39:50 PM »
Can someone recommend a pedal that will give me loads of sustain/feedback? I'm not too sure where to look so would appreciate any advie on this! I'm looking for something that will get me fairly close to the sound on With Or Without You (I'm not covering it - it's the only well known song I can think of with 'that' sound)

Cheers all,

Ian.

don't know if there's a pedal that'll do that, Edge used a prototype guitar with a sustainer device on the original recording.  that original guitar cost a lot of money and had a lot of electronics in it.  nowadays there's the Fernandes sustainer which fits into the guitar, and comes on a number of Fernandes guitars.  it can sustain the note infinitely (well, until the battery runs out!) and can switch between holding the original note or an harmonic feedback mode.

if you look in Drac's thread on his new build guitar it has one fitted.
cry HAVOC!! and let slip the pigs of war!!!

A decent compressor can give you loads of extra sustain...

Cheers Nolly. There's another question - a decent compressor. What's the 'most' decent compressor? I'm not a big fan of Boss stuff so assume there must be loads of other good oens out there!

Well, the Keeley compressor is generally regarded to be one of the best. I just got myself a 4-knob one, and it is incredibly transparent. Looks pretty cool as well

That does indeed look lovely. I may well look out for one in the near future.

Yep, it's an awesome pedal. Not too cheap over this side of the pond though. They do a two-knob version as well, you still get the same features, but the attack and trim pots are adjusted from inside the pedal.

My next question was going to be about the differences between the 4 and 2 knob versions. Are you a mind reader?

My parents are going over to America in April so may well be making a special purchase for me (I guess you already knew that though considering your mind reading abilities)

Great minds.

Sounds like a plan, they're way cheaper over there, just watch out for customs!

I presume its under the limit on tax.

Your parents could easily claim it as a gift - cos thats what it is.

Unfortunately not, I got charged just shy of £30 on mine, but that was via post. Should be easy enough to avoid the tax if you're bringing it through by hand though.

I own a Boss CS-3 Monte Allums Opto Plus mod - It works great, sustains nicely, and does the job of a sustain pedal nicely.

Kramer made a guitar called the "Sustainer" or "Sustainiac" or something like that in the 1980's.  Good luck trying to find one in working order.
