Pots question
« on: February 10, 2008, 02:21:57 PM »
Hey guys. When changing out the volume and tone pots for a Les Paul, I am assuming I can just go out and buy 4 500K CTS pots, right?? I mean, there is no difference between the volume and tone pots, correct? Do they have to be a calibrated set? I have changed them out before but I have always bought an entire upgrade set from RS Guitarworks.

Depending on the age of the guitar you will need long shaft pots for a Les Paul.  Also you need Audio taper (or Log) pots for the volume and Linear for the tone (ideally, though log will work for both depending how much you use the tone pots!).
So many pickups, so little time

That's interesting because the upgrade kits always came with CTS 500K audio taper pots for the tone controls and custom tapered superpots for the volume. Another interesting thing I noticed is that the wiring diagram they give you shows that you need to ground the capacitor onto the tone pot whereas most vintage diagrams I have seen hook the capacitor up from the tone to the volume pot.
