Hi Tim and Everyone Else,
Great to see a Forum Tim! Nice work.
I have finally been Reunited with my Very First Les Paul Custom after a Gap of 23 Years! I'm delighted to have her back in the Fold again. However, Previous Owner has removed her origin Pups and has replaced them with a set of Schaller H/Bs which I believe were donated from one of his Older Heritage LPs.
Having spoken to Ron, (R/2e) he has suggested that what I need is a set of Mules to return her to her Former Glory? I'm certain that he is quite correct, however, just to be difficult... I'd really like a Set that are Open Coil and...if Possible...Zebra Bobbins. I know! Ijnow! I don't ask much do I!

Can you do it Tim?

The Schallers are really remarkable, but MUCH too Bright for my tastes.
This LP was always quite a Dark sounding Guitar and now it is the Brightest LP that I own. OK in its place I suppose, just the stuff I play doesn't require that much Top.

Listen to Andy Powell's sound on just about any Wishbone Ash Album and that is what I'm after. I like to do all controlling via the Guitar, so Cleans with a slight Growl when you Dig In and then Fluid Warmth when you open up the Guitars Volume?
Ampwise I use a Combination of Cornford and Fender. Hope that helps?

Hi Robb, welcome to the forum. Ron's right, the Mule set are the way to go and open zebra bobbins is no problem at all-you can even have double cream if you want 8)

Well the excitement levels are getting just about intolerable!!
Ron has mailed the Zebra Mules to me and they should be here tomorrow!!
I really am excited about these, I'll let you know as soon as they are in and running. :D

Tim, how do you get round the double white issue? - I though DiMarzio owned some sort of rights for double white 'buckers :x

Dimarzio hold a patent for double cream coils in the US-how someone can patent a colour I don't know-but it doesn't hold water here in the UK :twisted:

Well..."Glory Be"!!
Finally I have had some time to spare to really Run Up these Mules. Originally my Les Paul had PAFs which had come from a Train Wreck of an SG Standard. On re purchasing the Guitar about 2 months ago I was less than impressed by the Schallers that had been put in to her way back when.
These Mules are quite literally the Best Thing that I have ever played through.....and believe me...I have played just about everything that there is! OK....it's a VERY subjective thing and not everyone wants, likes the same thing, Thank God! For "my" tastes these are what I have been searching for. I like the Older Style 60's and Early 70's Blues Rock and as such...that has set the course that lead to my searching out the "Right" Pickup.
Thus far I have run the guitar through a Cornford Harlequin, A Fender Concert....then Both together via A/B Box and finally through my Antique, Much Loved...but sadly retired Marshall 50 Head.....NON MASTER VOLUME, the results are quite staggering with each Amp and combinations of same. Certainly as far as the Cornford goes, I can well understand why the Guitarist Team were heaping praise on the Mules!!
The Fender, Very different, but in such a GOOD way. Think Duane Allman??? And as for the Marshall........Well there really aren't words enough! Without setting up for anything in particular....INSTANT Paul Kossoff Circa "All Right Now". 100% on the money!! At long Last I have a Guitar that I can Drive the way I like to....Via the Volume and Tone Controls. I have the String Seperation and Transparency that I have failed to get anywhere else.....and a Tone to Die For.

Thanks to Ron at R/2e Guitars and Tim.......I'm a Happy Man. God...I'm so much more than that....I'm ecstatic!!! :D

That's just plain STUPID!
Well, it goes hand in hand with the product those Eye-talian bastids make! LOL
Er ... I do find their cables to be pretty good, tho, even tho I'm sure they are merely someone else's branded with DMZ's logo.

Funny company Dimarzio, they seem to think getting patents for absolutely everything including fresh air and colours mean their p/ups will sound good-the only thing that makes a pickup sound good is patience, attention to detail and using you ears when voicing and not theory. Obviously I personally believe handwinding and scattering the wire plays a big part too.

Glad the Mules are doing it for you Ron, they're my favs too, I find I can get just about anything I want from them and they always sound HUGE!
