2x12 cabinet questions
« on: February 21, 2008, 03:28:12 PM »
I am looking for a 2x12 to run with my Mesa 1x12 combo

I havebeen looking at the framus and orange 2x12's, both cabinets have 2 celestion v30's but one is 16ohm and one is 8ohm. I am pretty ignorant of all things related to ohm's etc. I am assuming the difference is due to how they are wired up ?

How would this translate into tonal effects ?

The difference in the total ohmage of the cabs is down to both the wiring AND the ohm ratings of the individual speakers.

A 16 ohm 2x12 cab will have two 8 ohm speakers wired in series. If you wired those same speakers in parallel you would get a 4 ohm cab. But there is no way to wire two 8 ohm speakers to give a total 8 ohm load.

In contrast an 8 ohm 2x12 cab will have two 16ohm speakers wired in parallel. The only other wiring possibility would be to wire them in series, but that would give a 32ohm total load, which is not appropriate for any tube guitar amps that I know of.

so if I follow what you're say, one cab will have 16ohm V30's and the other 8ohm V30's ?

what effect does that have on the sound ?

8ohm V30's should sound the same as 16ohm V30s'

BUT ..... Your amp will sound different at through it's 16ohm tap into a 16ohm load compared to through its 8 ohm tap into an 8ohm load.

I would recommend using all the windings of the OT, and using the 16ohm tap if it is available. With some amps it is reported to make little difference. With others, many folks claim to like the higher load better.

Whatever you choose, please match the cabinet load to the the ohmage required by the amp speaker output that you are using. That is unless you don't mind risking frying your amp.

what is your mesa combo???may I suggest an ev loaded mesa Thiele 1x12-sit the combo on top and it will hang with anything out there-this is a very popular and EASY to lug around combo-the Thiele is ported and the bottom end  and projection is huge
