Author Topic: OLP MM1F, real floyd rose? (Read 8113 times)

On my search for a guitar to quench my EVH like thirst i've been searching for a cheap but decent guitar equipped with a floating trem.

Now i haven't seen these in the shops, these are the black ones not the flame burst whatever ones... and apparently, have a real floyd rose on them.

The website says 'Floyd Rose® Original double locking tremolo' and a few HC reviews confirm it.

I'm really excited as it's perfect for me, just a volume pot! gorgeous too.

Anyone have any idea where to get these in the UK?

I want one so bad, go budget axe's!

Not the ones I have seen, theyre licensed versions

Theyre nice enough little guitars, though I would suggest raising a few more quid and looking for a far East built Peavey Wolfgang. It's got a better bridge and a lovely neck

Floyd Roses are £150!
That's £50 for a guitar! They must be terrible

Thats a hell of an update to the OLP range

Thats cheap enough to consider the thought that FR have either bought into OLP or they are looking rid of an defective batch (pardon my cynicism)

I reworked an OLP for my airbrushing mate Nick
Was pretty damn good
Much better after a refret and new pickups but not bad at all, especially for a cheap guitar.

Sometimes you find that big companies like Floyd, EMG or Duncan will do crazy good deals for large companies who buy enough product
It sort of keeps the production lines flowing

My local guitar shop had one that I liked a lot (hard tail though) and was great for testing amps cos my 6 string of preference (at the time) was a wolfgang. I have to say for the money it was great.

But thats a cracking price for an OFR equipped guitar

I also love their 5 string Tony Levin model bass (but wish they would release an active 4 string)

I've played an OLP MM, the non-Floyd version and... apart from the bridge... it was good, felt very nice, the necks are good and the pickups are alright but you can tell they're cheapos.

yeah, i noticed that one too. bc rich are bringing out gunslingers again with ofrs and dimarzios. might be worth a look too. haven't tried them though, they could suck.

+1 on jonathan/feline's thoughts. just because we pay £150 for an OFR doesn't mean OLP are. though what's quite strange is that the "real" musicmans/men seem to (ones i've tried anyway) have Musicman-branded gotohs. Maybe OFRs were cheaper in bulk.

Ah yes, you can get the older version of the MM1 for 200 quid, the light coloured one with the maple top and Licenced Floyd...

This one is the black one with an official one but without the maple top, but that's great for me as i'm after a basswood guitar, with floydy, two hums a switch and a volume and isnt an ibanez, so this is perfect!

I just can't find anyone anywhere having them in stock, at least in the UK :/

Gonna keep on looking...

I'll be praying i get some cash soon, perfect guitar for me!

Apparently even the frets arent a problem anymore, groovy.

Must say, I recently acquired an OLP Stingray copy, and it's a perfectly servicable wee bass for my purposes. It's not a scratch on a full weight Musicman, obviously, but compared to the various horrible Squiers I tried, it's a wee peach.

Now, i just need to work out how to play the damned thing.

Sorry to bump this, but someone on another forum said these had Ping Floyd Roses, and I wanted to give you a heads-up. I haven't confirmed this, but if you were interested, I'd advise you to check with OLP.

"Real" Floyd Roses are made by Schaller, I think. Ping are legally allowed to put Floyd Rose on their trems, I think, but are allegedly not as good as the Schaller ones- I haven't tried the Ping ones, so I have no idea. Maybe Jonathan or someone else has tried the Ping ones and can weigh in about how good they are.

Either way, I'd send OLP an email to see.

That's interesting, because I've heard that Fender are now using Ping tuners, including the locking ones with "F" logos on the thumbwheels. They still look just like the Fender/Schaller ones, though (at least in pictures, I haven't actually seen them close up).

It might be partly because of the problems the Schaller company has had, but I bet it also saves money!

I've done some reading and the differences are minimal, and some people prefer the Ping version so... either way i'm not fussed. for a guitar of this level i'd have just replaced the Lisenced with a Ping anyway.

Good to know though, i wasnt aware of the two manufacturers.

Edit: Will still be sending an e-mail to OLP to find out, i like the idea of having a Schaller though some people are indeed saying the Ping is better...
