Ordered a new amp
« on: February 23, 2008, 05:55:48 PM »
Finally got my act together and, after a trek halfway across the country to try a Mesa Rectifier, I ordered a Dual Rectifier Roadster head from Andertons in Guildford.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be seeing it until mid April, because (according to the distributor) transport company that brings Mesa into the UK hasn't got any free containers until April.

There's always bloody something, isn't there?

A good buy. I tried a PRS CE24 out on a Mesa (I think it was the Roadster) and I shat myself on the first chord.

Your patience will be well rewarded. :)

Here's hoping! I used a PRS Singlecut Trem to try out the Rectifier, and it sounded glorious!

Nice.  I've always liked the Rectifier high gain sound.  I imagine that the Roadster has just about every sound anyone could ever need in it :)

Hope April comes round soon - why couldn't they have sold you the one in the shop?

I was wondering the same thing...

Or was it a different model or something?

Yeah, the amp I tried in the shop was a Single Rectifier. Long story short, they had a Roadster when I booked train tickets to Guildford, but in the intervening 3 weeks, they sold it.

So, I went anyway, because they had a few other Mesas in and I wanted to know what the Mesa hi gain channel sounded like.

Plus, I live in a bit of a backwater as far as high-end gear goes, and figured it'd be nice to see some shiny, pretty expensive guitars.  :)

Didn't there used to be a really good guitar shop (Cranes?) somewhere in South Wales?

Cranes is still going. They've got branches in Cardiff and Swansea (where I live). It's a pretty good store, but they don't sell Mesa, so weren't much use as far as that went. They do have some quite nice Custom Shop Fender stuff in the Cardiff branch, but not much in the way of variety. Gamlins in Cardiff has a few PRS guitars, but nothing too exotic. Andertons had some stuff that seemed to have telephone numbers instead of price tags, which was interesting to say the least.  :)

I suppose, if I'm going to be fair, South Wales is more of an amp backwater than an all-gear backwater. It's pretty hard to find anything around here that isn't a Marshall, Peavey or Laney.

Great choice mate, the Roadster I tried was awesome!
Between the Buried and Me used them at the Dillinger gig I was at the other day, and their tone was fantastic.

I'm originally from Swansea.  :)

When I was a lad there were a few music shops, a place called John Hams (where I got my very first guitar!) and a couple of branches of Duck, Son & Pinker - whose main branch is in Bath, where I went to University.  Don't suppose they're still there?

Well, Duck Son in Bath is still going. Absolute rip-off prices though, and the staff are stuck up tw*ts. No point even going near there when you've got a guitar heaven like Vintage and Rare nearby!

Well, in those days I only looked in the windows   .  I only had one guitar then :o !  Still got it, too.

My first guitar was bought from that place too, and I'm desperately sad I that I sold it years back. Twas a lovely little red Fender Duo-sonic. A pair of BKP singles, and I bet it'd have been a great guitar to mess around with...
