Which pedal for solo boost?

Hi all,

I have a 3 channel Brunetti and am looking for a pedal that will give me a decent solo boost.  I guess I need more volume and a touch more gain.

I have a T-rex Moeller but the clean boost only really works on the clean channel.  When used in either the boost or lead channels it just adds more gain and mud.

What can you lot recommend?  Are there any pedals out there that simply boost volume, what about treble boosters or Xotic AC booster...

A good EQ is perfect for solo boosts - set it to a mid-range hump and you'll cut right through the mix. I recommend the MXR 6-Band EQ very highly.

If not that, I love using a wah with a volume boost for solos but that's just me.

Also, consider a decent clean boost like the SPF Ego Boost - it can be used as a totally transparent boost where you just get extra decibels or you can boost the low or high frequencies.

Personally, EQ is the way to go for me.

That's because you're just slamming the pre-amp.

If you have an effects loop, try a booster or EQ there which will give you an actual volume boost when playing with a distorted tone.

Your clean boost will work fine in the FX loop of your amp.

There is no real-world way to boost an overdriven amp with a pedal in front of the amp; it will only add more saturation.

Cool, thanks for the info guys.  I'll try the Moeller through the FX loop and see.  

How does overdrive sound thrugh the effects loop?  I guess it would mainly affect the power stage of the amp and give more power tube distortion?

A treble boost might do what you need although how you set the gain on the amp is ciritical - not enough and all you get is a treblier sound but louder, too much and the amp doesn't have any more volume to give. At around 3/4 you'll find a sweet spot where kicking in the treble boost gives you a bit more gain and volume boost without the muddiness so it will cut through without having to rely on sheer volume to be heard.

I use a Keely Java boost and can highly recommend it although there are plenty of others on the market.

Amps are sometimes picky as to what happens in the FX loop, level wise.

Therefore it is adviseable toi experiment, it could sound good to have a boost for leads (lead = 120%), but it could also sound better to have a reduction for rhythm (like 80%) instead and just go 100% for lead, if you know what I mean.

thanks for the input guys.  Itried the boost in the effects loop and it did the trick :)

The overdrive sounded rubbish, but then I was never expecting it to sound good.

Now I just have to find some way of splitting the Moeller in half :-D  I fear more GAS coming on :(

I've not found the GAS ever to fully stop; you can only contain it, slow it down, or distract it for a little while.
