The official Greg Martin appreciation thread
« on: February 25, 2008, 08:45:50 PM »
Hello all,

I've heard that most people talk greatly about their guitar heroes and that's all well and good but I don't many people raving about Greg Martin, the guitar player for bands like "The Kentucky Headhunters", "The mighty jeremiahs" or "Rufus Huff". He's my current favourite.

IMO he is one os the very best; tone, identity, melody, good rockanroll chunk and thump and above all a terrific and humble human being.

Let's give him from here the mighty BKP forum a great boost and please join in everybody who loves Greg's playing, music and personal value.

We love you Greg!

If you don't know him just click on theyoutube links. We are just scratching the surface here but hey!! we have to start somewhere...

God bless you my friend!

Hello guys,

Greg seems to be complete unknown to BKP players. This thread has had no "appreciation" whatsoever.

Anyway, just wanted to share this with you guys.

I first got in touch with Greg a few years back via email and he was always polite and friendly.
This year I bought my 8 year old son his first guitar. His favourite player is Greg Martin too so I asked Greg if he could sign the cover for my son's Mighty Jeremiahs CD. He said "no probs, just send it to me and [singer] Jimmy Hall and we will sign it".

He did sign it but on top of that he sent all these great goodies including the very hard to get instructional DVD.

God bless him.

I wanted to share that with you. He is a terrific player but even a better person.

The instructional video is very cool and -as far as I know- no longer available. His teaching style is old-school. Basically, "look how I do it and copy me" but that is done in a very laid-back, friendly and clear style.

Cool jam with Arlen Roth at the end of it too.

Has anybody seen it before??

Never heard of this guy tbh but just had a listen to the clips and there's some really nice playing :D

I much prefer Les Pauls played like this with less gain so you can hear that lovely wood....

you are absolutely right.

His tone is kind of in between Kossoff-Gibbons-Mick Taylor.

He can rock too:

Just seen this thread, only took two years!

I've been aware of Greg Martin for many years, read lots of interviews with him in guitar mags.  But this is the first time I've ever heard his playing.  Lovely old school tones.

I always assumed the Kentucky Headhunters would be "a little bit country" for my taste.  But I liked those two clips - is Rufus Huff much more of a hard rock project, or do the Headhunters rock too?

haha

Rufus Ruff is all about rocking yeah!
The Kentucky Headhunters are more country but they play some rocking music too.

I'm quite keen on the Fralin made pickups he is using in this vid

That's a great tone for a simple Microcube as well

I've noticed Greg Martin has a close working relationship with RS Guitarworks.

I was going to order one of their pre-wired electronics kits the other day, but they were charging over $80 shipping on a $60 order.  :(

yep.... that's the problem with RS. They charge you an arm and a leg for p&p. I love their stuff but I must admit that I find the extra cost hard to justify... for my electronic needs I have a much more covenient source now....
